Fuel upgrade

Hey guys I was wondering which one would be the
first mod to do regarding fuel supply. It would be
bigger injectors or fuel pump... I belive that the OE
injectors can hold the max pressure from the OE pump
(72 to 93 psi) but at this pressure the volume sent by
the pump is drastically reduced. I was wondering if
adding a high flow pump ~40GPH @ 40 psi would give
better response during sudden accelerations, and of
course particularly for nitrous.

I would like to discuss about it...

def. go with a higher flow pump first....when u start messing with the injectors, u'll be opening a new can of worms.....im not too familiar with the protege system, but once we (PGTs) start messing with the flow rate of injectors, u'll have to somehow play with the fuel pressure and tweaking the ECU.....

Thanks man.

Thats what I thought too. I will stick with a in-line fuel pump since they are easier to install and reasonably good to increase fuel pressure and flow. I am afraid thge injectors are working at their max or 85% of theirs duty cycle though...

if, i am not mistaken , I think we have to pull the gas tank down to install the feul injectors in our Protege

Hey Bruce, you probably meant to say pull the fuel rail, thats true, but a friend of mine is running the injectors from the 626 and he is running too rich in his 1.5L. He claim gains in HP but nothing on the dyno though. Pump is the way to go first as our friend here commented previously.

My 1.6L Miata, with it's stock 205cc/min injectors ran just fine with 250cc/min injectors (a 1.8L Miata uses 230cc/min).

I have no idea about my stock injectors specs. Try to find it all over the place but nothing. Maybe going to a 230cc/min would be fine. A friend of mine is running a mazda 626 though and he is running rich as I told before. He and I are not running turbo or supercharged. I was looking for just a bit more fuel for safety reasons and to go little bigger on N2O. I may try to find or call some junkyard to see how much they ask for a set of 1.8L miata injectors, perhaps we can do business with yours 1.6 injectors (which is probably bigger than the 1.5L).

peace,

no , I ment actually removing the feul pump , I think you have to pull down the whole feul tank if I am not mistaken ...
I think we could get away with using some injectors, for a 1.8L protege engine , that should be good , but I would figure our factory should be good enough for the time being , and don't forget you can also had a FPR if you want to ,.. I will be purchasing a AFR meter , so I can keep an eye on my AFR ,.

Ahhhh, I see what you say. But indeed the fuel pump can be "touched" very easily from the back seat. Just remove or lift the back seat and you will see the pump right there. Its not hard. I even was thinking about in getting a Walbro 255 l/hr but I want some "universal" and therefore a in-line would work better for me.
Maybe the 1.8 injectors would be fine as you said. Little research on the Z5 about those mods.....

I think the Z5 is a strong motor , just like any other motor that mazda makes , I mean why else would they use it .. with a turbo or nos ,,, maybe even a supercharger this engine can put out some respectable numbers, .. we have good tq but the car just needs more push , hey look and 99&00's miata , it is a 1.6L with a turbo putting out some wicked numbers lol ... the 1.5 is not much smaller, although I am not really looking for more power than about 150 to 160 hp or at least that in tq, if I can get that in tq then I would be cool , cause that would make the car really haul down the drag strip

Agree, but I would like to see it in dynos or even on the web somewhere. I believe that the Z5 CAN be strong as you say but its a little scare FOR ME to think it can handle 150-160 or 174% of the stock power. I 've been through some bottles of gas using DRY 42 shot only and make me feel scare still with people blowing their engines.... But, I still think that you should go n20 WET if you are interested in tq. its way cheaper than the turbo and less complicated. AGREE that turbo project is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more cool, but sometimes we need to think and think , and think.....

Anyhow, still looking for a MSD in-line fuel pump or 1.8L injectors or both...

later Bruce,

I really don't know why , but I am scared of NOS , lol ,, as much as I would love to have it , I just think I will leave it alone, . I guess you can say , I really feal uncomfortable with using it .. hey if you even need to holla at me , I am going to pm you my cell number,.. ok .. as sometime I will get caught up with work and won't get the chance to respond, shoot man I let me SCC and ST mag subscriptions expire , believe that ...

well usually if swapping to injectors that are only slightly bigger than stock, the ECU COULD accomodate for them, of course u might have to turn down the FP at idle, like with the probes, we can technically use millenia S 280cc/min injectors (220 stock), and if we turn the idle FP to like ~30-35psi, they will do fine....but if ur talking about going from 200 to 450, then i wouldnt count on the ECU
