Sounds close if not exact. Close enough anyway since you have a little leeway in the door. Just don't do what I did in the back: 
Since at the time I didn't have a way to cut the metal, I just bolted them underneath. You distort the sound a little doing that since a good bit of the speaker is covered up.

I just got done installing both front and rear speakers in my 1st Gen protege... I used 6 1/2" speakers for both front doors and rear. My only problem was that they weren't designed for the tri-screw placement and instead were made for 4-screw placement. I had to do some 'rigging up to get them to be there and I plan now to just create a new back carpet/board for the speakers themselves (and their covers.) However, the 6 1/2's seem to fit fairly well, and they appeared to be the same size as the stock speakers I took out.

So the back uses 6.5" too? I just found an sweet deal on some avg (but much better than stock speakers) at $25/pr but I only got one pair because there weren't any 5.25" ...I'll probably go get another pair tomorrow then (I have cavalier 6x9's in the back being held by 1 screw 
)

If you already have 6x9's from your Cavalier and want to put them in your Protege, they may make an adaptor for that. I am not positive though. Also, I am not sure about whether or not mounting depth would be a problem. Just tryin' to help you save some dough.

The speakers I got for the door cost me $25cdn (which is about $15 to you) and they are considerably nicer than stock! The cav speakers sound like crap, the door speakers on the protege sound better...
maybe I should just take the speakers off the door and put those in the back?

Yes that's what I meant, but I did notice that even though the sound comming from the back isn't very important, you can really tell when you have shitty sounding speakers when you turn it up (and you don't have a sub in your car) the bass just sounds like ****! Crappy speakers can't quite handle low frequency bass and its noticeable even comming from the back. I don't even mean distortion, just a crappy hollow sounding bass!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to hear the new speakers I installed yesterday... I'm having a little trouble installing my aftermarket head unit into my 1st gen. I'm sure they'll sound good as they sounded awesome in the test room at the local car audio dealership. My stock front speakers still looked fairly nice (my girlfriend is going to swipe them to replace some of her blown stock speakers), but my back speakers were shot to hell and back (can I help that I loved bass?) The speaker cones themselves were completely torn from the edging (sorry for the lack of terminology, I'm not a dictionary) and disfigured probably from sun or moisture. Either way, they're going to the dumster.
