Tach & Speedo lights on Gen 1 Pro
Hey guys... anyone out there know how to change the lights of the tach and speedometer on a 1st Gen Protege. I woke up today and thought of changing them to either blue or red but not sure how to take it out and change it. So if anyone out there can shine some light on this situation for me that'd be kewl.
Thanx

two ways of doing it
first any most easy (i think), is to lean your arm up underneath the dash to where the gauge cluster is you will feel some knobby-like things. turn them to the left and they should fall out of the openings. make sure you remember what area they came from, or youll spend a lot of time trying to find the holes later.
the second way is to take the entire cluster out of the dash. which, in my opinion, is a big pain in the ****. you start by undoing all the plastic panelsin front of the cluster. remove all the screws. the next part is very tricky. the plastic thats in front of the cluster must be removed. in my 323, there was no way to adjust the steering wheel height, so i just had to give the plastic a good yank and hope that nothing would break. if your adjusts, drop the steering wheel and the plastic should slide right out. after that, there are four screws that hold the cluster in place. disconnect the speedo cable and the four electrical connectors and the cluster should slide out of the dash.
hope that helps some

Easier Way?

in my '91 323, I just undid the four bolts on the underside that hold up the steering wheel, moved the drivers seat up a little and just let it rest on the seat. This is the way that I removed my cluster (about four times) before I finally swapped in a cluster from a '93 Protege, in order to get a tach without resorting to a external one. Worked well for me.
