If had to do my sub over again (and I probably will) I'd either spend the bucks for a high-power, high-quality amp, or just go for the lower priced model, with the high-quality manufacturer. My amp basically sucks, and it is "rated" for 600W - bullshit is what it is.

Don't let anyone talk you into getting "this brand-x model that pushes 10 gigawatts of power" instead of the "little" amp from a good maker. I did, and I regret it. It just pushes "bad" watts, not "clean" power.

Two 10" woofers in stereo would produce more volume than one similar 12" woofer providing equal amplification. The 12" woofer should be able to reproduce lower frequencies however. It depends on what you're looking for.

That's not entirely true. While there are a lot of amps that are similar quality, and would be difficult to tell apart by sound, there are some that are noticably inferior, and superior, to others. It does take some practice/training to hear the difference. Also the music being listened to, and it's frequency range and transients, will make the amplifiers quality more evident. Amplifiers use power transistors to amplify voltage, which work differently than transformers.

I don't mean to undermine your car audio prowress in any way, but I would bet you that if you took two amps and played them at the exact same output level and switched back and forth between them, you wouldn't know the difference. Amplifiers are basically transformers that amplify voltage. That's it. They should not add or detract anything from the music because they increase voltage pure and simple. To really say "This amp sounds better than that one" you would have to keep everything equal except for the amp, and you'd have to match the output level with a voltmeter.

Actually, the US does make better high end amplifiers than anywhere else. Especially for the home audio market. Have you ever heard of Krell home audio amplifiers? The best you can get, made here in the USA. Unfortunately, some of them cost more than our cars. Kicker certainly isn't in that category though. Japan is excellent at mass producing electronics at a good price. They dominate the car audio electronics market. How about Xtant car amps? Made in the US. I really like them, but a bit too pricey for me. I like Alpine amps, which is what I have, for a good value. The voltage supplied to the amplifier also effects their output. That's one of the things I like about Alpine, they list their output at 12 volts and 14.4 volts.

as for the sub selection your musical preferance should be your number one deciding factor. Two 10's are great for tight, punchy bass that is found in most ROCK mucic. 12s and 15s do go deeper and are great for the thunderous bass that is in most Rap music. They take up a lot more room though. If you want a bad *** driver look into the JL W7 series. They are pricey but the 10" has 3" of excursion and when we tested it in my car is rattled my chest and everything in the car (all this from on litlle 10" using my ROCKFORD amp).

DAYUM GRO!!!! That set up is gonna sound real nice The force is strong in that sub! lol

I agree with the American amp thing (them being better and all). If you look on my signature you will see what i'm currently running, but the other day my boy let me try out his Rockford amp wich was only rated at 400watts (just a lil more than my amp), and I couldn't even reconize my sub! The amp had it working.... something the jensen can't even get close to...... I mean DAYUM!! The whole box was moving around on it's own! Next sub i'm getting.... ummmm definatly American

Note: Although it was much much louder.... it wasn't as smooth Oh well, can't have ur cake and eat it!

The chest rattling is not good but was amazing. Goto a store that sells JL and ask them to show you the 10W7. It will amaze you and will out-perform almost, if not everything, out there. I wish I had one just for the esclusivness. Its an awesome driver.

A lot of the answer to that question will be determined by the type of music you listen to. Techno, Rock, latin...stuff like that works better with 10" subs because they are more responsive, or there is less speaker, so they move faster. But in general, I think 12's sound better for all kinds of music. I'm running one Eclipse 88120 Aluminum sub with a JL Audio 500/5 (100x2, 25x2, 250x1) and it's LOUD!!!! I did a 138.8 on our Audio Control meter at work. I had 2 12W3's in my other protege with a Memphis 1000d and this new setup sounds SOOOO much better. I listen to a pretty wide range of music, and it all sounds good. A Memphis 1000d is a pretty good amp, especially at 600 bucks. But crossover quality isn't terrific. You can get a JL 12W3 and a JL 250/1 for about $550 or so and sound great!! Just take a listen to what people have. Don't let someone sell you something by playing it in a showroom....this isn't home theater after all. Car stereo relies a lot on the vehicle it's installed in. We disconnected our switchboard a long time ago b/c it's useless when selling CAR AUDIO. A good shop should have a few cars around to listen to...typically the employees cars are hooked up pretty well. So shop around and watch out for the guys trying to sell the pawn shop stuff.

u generally need a 450watt+ amp to make the kicker thump. im running 600watts to it (or was) im jus upgrading speakers and buyin new subs!

Infinity

Go with Infinity Kappa perfect 12", best sub i've ever had, when I went to buy it the guy gave me the showroom sub until they get more in stock and he told me to destroy it if I can, I thought he was crazy until I tried to kill it the day I had to bring it back, I shut all the speakers off and just left the amp(600W MTX) and the sub and I cranked the gain on the amp to full and the bass, and turned up the bass on the radio to full and gave it the sickest bass music I could find, it got little distorted when I was getting to the peak of the radio but IT DID NOT BLOW , i've had it for about a year now and i've no problems, it's a kickarse sub, takes a beating

Infinity Kappa 12" (1400W/peak, 350rms/peak)

wassup everyone, back again!

damn, $300-$350 per sub? lemme see here:

(2) 12" fusion powerplants $280
(2) 12" adire shiva's $250
(2) 12" w3's $400
(2) 12" kicker comp vr's $230

...you can get a crap load of stuff for $350! but, amps play a big part in whatever you're gonna run. i suggest you do it right the first time and spend a little on the amps. you want clean power from underrated amps.

me, i got one 12" fusion powerplant, and i haven't dynamated anything so that little spoiler in the back keeps rattling.
