Question Speaker Summary

Sup everybody... Nice board you have here from what I see so far... I've been searching around for some answers and found most of them but I can't seem to get a grasp on a few things about my 2001 2.0 LX Protege , I would appriciate it if someone could summarize these in one message for me....

1. How many stock speakers do I have? (6? 1 in each door and 2 on the rear deck?)

2. What are the sizes of each stock speaker?
(5x7/6x8 in the 4 doors and 2 6x9's on rear deck?)

3. What is the stock gauge of the speaker wires? What do most people replace them with?

Thanks everybody...

I'm pretty sure you could find this stuff out by doing a search or checking the FAQ. For a fact, you have 4 speakers. I believe the stock speakers in an LX are two-way 5 x 8s in the front doors and two-way 6 x 9s in the rear deck. I think the stock wire is probably 16 or 18 AWG. Unless you're pushing huge wattage, it should suffice.

Hope this helps

Great, thanks. I know it was kinda a generic question, but I searched through 6ish pages of a search for "stock speakers" and other topics but i got alot of nonsense and plenty of stuff about the P5... couldn't search for "LX" because it says it's too small of a term or something. Thanks again though.

Just know that you have NO speakers in your rear doors. I know, I know, it looks like they would be there, but the LX shares it's door panels with the other Protege's (including the 5), and the P5 is the only one with speakers in the rear doors.

So you should have the standard 5x7 front door/6x9 rear deck setup.

Protege sedan- 5x7 in the fron doors
- 6x9 in rear deck
- No rear door speakers

Protege 5 - 5x7 in the fron doors
- 6 1/2 in rear doors

The stock wiring looked to be 20 or 22 guage wiring when I bypassed mine. I was able to run 14 guage into each of my doors through the factory clip by drilling out several unused spaces.

i was looking on crutchfield for possible replacement speakers, and according to them the "Best fit" for a P5 are 6"x8" in the front doors and 6.5" in the rear doors. If the stock ones are smaller will these "best fit" speakers actually fit? I assume you would need some kind of adapter (which they seem to offer as well).

They also mention that adapters are free when you buy your speakers, but do they send them automatically or do you have to request them?

Also, when they say you get "Two 2-way speakers" what do they mean by the "2-way" part?

sweet, thanks for the info everybody... next question is, when i do install speakers in the rear doors, i'm already sure i'll have to run speaker wire back there but, are the rear doors ready for 6.5's or will i have to drill holes and do a custom install?

The doors are fully prepared for speakers (the holes are there) but the wiring might be a different story.

I'm not sure if it is in there already (probably not) and getting it in can be a real hassle. The rubber boot where all the wiring feeds into the door is not just a "tube" - it has a connector on the door jamb that you will need to drill into to make a hole for the wires, unless you want to go outside the rubber boot (kinda ghetto, IMO, although it has been done). You can't just "feed" wires through without first making a hole in the connector.

I tried on my front doors with a Dremel and angled head adapter - I did get through, but snaking the wire proved to be very difficult in the front passenger door. I also discovered that I didn't drill a "clean" hole, and had nicked some of the wiring inside the connector. I decided to ditch the idea before I shorted something out or caused myself some real problems. The rear doors may be easier - maybe.

Why the need for door speakers anyway? Aren't the 6x9s in the back shelf enough? IMO, it might not be worth it to put speakers in the rear doors, just because the sound is so blocked by the seats, and it may be a shitload of work for little return. But, hey - your car, do whatcha like, and I wish you much luck!
