Speaker size in doors.

I just have one quick question about the size of the speakers in the front doors of a 02 ES. Most web sites and one store i went to say the front doors have 6-1/2's in them and one store told me they have 6x8's in them. Can some on clear up my confusion on this (I sure hope they are 6-1/2's )

hehe, the same question drove me mad about a year ago. they are actually 5x7s. don't listen to those sites (like futureshop) that say the front doors are 6 1/2, thats wrong. 6 1/2s will only fit with slight modifications.

Now I have a pair of usless 6-1/2's
But it is really confusing because the MazdaUSA site says they are 6x8's. Why doesn't anyone agree? Haha

Oh, I am from Saskatchewan.

6 1/2s should fit will alittle modifications. it shouldn't be too hard to do.

6x8s could probably fit in the doors because they are the same shape as 5x7s.

By modifications what do you mean? Physically making the holes larger to fit the differently sized speakers?

im not completely sure but i think it is a bracket you place into the door so you can screw the speaker in properly since the 6 1/2s are circles and 5x7s are ovals.

I have had my doors apart and I can tell you the front spearkers are 6X8 's . To use 6.5" you will have to make a baffle to fit the stock hole with the cutout to fit the 6.5" speaker . You may also have to trim the door panel a bit on the inside to clear the new speaker .

PDF for MDF?

I was going to make a PDF file of the template I created to make the adapters in my P5 for the 6.5" speakers in the front. If you're willing to cut your own out of MDF (all you need is a drill and a jigsaw, though a skilsaw also helps), and if our doors are similar (I assume they are), I'd be happy to give it to you.

It's really no big deal to create your own template if you wanted to, as you can just take off the inside door panel, then take a piece of cardboard and size it to fit in the speaker location. Do it on the removed panel, not the door itself, as that's where all the obstructions are.

You just want to make it as big as possible (making sure you cover up the original elliptical speaker hole) while still leaving some wiggle room (I left 1/8" clearance all around). Leaving straight sides on the adapter facilitates cutting it, too.

about the 5x7/6x8 discrepancy...they are essentially the same size on the outer ring... it just the speaker that is just a tiny bit larger... so i hear.... i have 6x8's in my probe and comparing them to 5x7 in store its the same backet but the cone seems larger..
