What size speakers do the Pro 5s have?

 

5 1/4's in the front 6 1/2 in the back. Please search older posts before posting. This has been answered precisely about 6 billion times.

 

are they 5.25"s in the front? i thought (and read from other posts) that they were 5x7/6x8's. i know the rears are 6.5's (a mistake i found out too late) but hopefully i'll be okay with what i bought...

 

this whole "speaker size in a P5" thing seems to not have a definitive answer to it. All the other threads seem to have conflicting information. The most common answer I have read is for US spec P5 you have 6.5" rear doors and 5x7 or 6x8 at the front doors.

If someone has taken them out, can you post what you found? Is Mazda just putting in what ever they could get at the lowest price for that shipment?

I'm looking to get some post X-mas.

 

yeah, the common posts say 5x7 front, 6.5 rear. frick, i bought 5x7's for my rear thinking it was the same as the front! what an idiot. i have 5.25 components ready to go in up front (heard it needs an adapter to fit) i ordered 6.5's earlier this morning for the back and hopefully it should be in by friday.

actually, the guy who did that webpage install thingy (can't remember the addy) has pics of the spkrs and the hole in the doors. ha ha, that made me feel even more stupid as i held my 5x7's and looked at the opening in the back door...

 

looking at http://www.astolfo.com/p5 it would seem to confirm that the front one is a 5x7 and the back a 6.5 though it seems that some mods need to be made to get the holes to line up with the Mazda non standard ones.

I'm going with those sizes for the moment... now to choose a speaker... as I am not using an additional amp I will need to choose wisely

 

im in that same situation. Im looking at component speakers but im not sure, got any ideas? i want some good quality speakers and im willing to pay some good money. I also would liek to figure a way to take care of the bad speaker placement problem in the p5. i think by putting tweaters higher up somewhere it might help a lot. what do u guys think?

 

After my post for opinions on the Polk audio units, that is the route I have chose. I thought about component speakers that would allow for tweeter placement and decided against it. I'm just not motivated enough to do the custom install needed

 

Has anyone seen the sizes that will go in the MP3? I can take the panel off but as cold as it is out side i dont want to mess with it......If you know what size that fits, please tell me!!! Thanks!

 

As far as tweeters go, I did put them in and they do help a great deal. I do believe that I am losing some output from the front speakers though, because the tweets are spliced into those wires. There are a few posts about this - the Ohm impedance rating, and what happens to it when you add speakers "inline" like this.

Basically, the speaker placement sux all around. I think a pair of nice 6x9s fitted into the interior hatchback cover would kick ***, and I'm still considering it. I had a '79 Camaro with only 6x9s, tweeters up front, and a tube in the trunk and it sounded like I had 10 speakers in the car.

I'm even thinking of trying something in the headliner. I have the moonroof, so the headliner is a couple of inches thick. I think I could fit some mids in there. Now wouldn't that be cool?

 

The problem i see is that the headliner is pretty flimsy (it rattles a lot, esp when in cold weather) and might deform and sag with the weight of the speakers.

And you better make sure that the moonroof doesn't hit the speakers when fully opened.

 

One thing I can say in my own defense and to my own credit: If I can't do something well, and have it look nice (especially on my P5), I won't do it at all. There's nothing worse than a hack-job install of anything on a car, particularly MY car.

Okay, so enough tooting my own horn - I think the speakers in the headliner could be done, with some careful planning. I'm not talking about putting huge cones in there - they'd have to be relatively light and shallow, like a 4" or 5" mid or something. I'd really have to pull the liner down and check it all out first, of course, and I'm certainly not going to do that until the weather warms up. So come spring, I might investigate this wacky idea a little further. Until then, I can only hope someone else tries it first! But it is something I've always wanted to try, even before my P5. I just think the imaging from speakers in the headliner would be awesome.
