Question polarity

It's about 10:30 and we're still installing the new speakers and HU . We're finaly ready to hook up the speakers but we dont know which wire is posistive and which in negative!! so we're stuck... anyone know which speaker wire is posistive and which is negative on a gen1???? Ive heard something bout a trick to find out, but im not sure how it would work...

Use a battery. Connect each end of the speaker wires to opposite sides of the battery, and when the speaker cone moves forward, you have the negative and positive speaker wires connected to the corresponding terminals of the battery.

he is right do the battery trick with say a square 9 volt battery.

There's only one free end of the wire though, the one that connects directly to the speakers. The other end is all plugged into the HU.

Since you have to clip the stock harness off of the wires anyway (you do, don't you?), clip it with an inch or so left on the harness. Then put the harness back on the stock speaker and use the inch of each wire left to do the 9-volt trick. Then you'll know what's what.

Hmm, when I replaced my speakers, I didn't check for polarity using the battery trick, but I did see that there's a '+' sign on the stock speaker. So I just connected that same wire to the '+' terminal on my new speakers (with '+' sign on it too). And of course, the other wire has to be '-'.

Is there anything wrong with my method?

just to clear this up, nobody mentioned what happens when you use the battery....(in this thread anyway, i know i have answered this before)

the correct polarity is when the speaker pops outward, it's reversed if it pops inwards.

As mentioned the perfect way is to use the factory plug with a small length of wire, if no plug, you can use small alligator clips.
