New Speakers are Poppin!

Hey,

I got the Pioneer REV 6.5 coaxel speakers in my car with a pioneer head unit that I have all put it not to long ago. Along with a JBL 600.1 amp and a 12" Ultimate Sound sub.
I have recently hooked up the amp and sub to the rest of the system. Since then I have noticed when I turn up the volume quite a bit, that during the song when there are highs being played, that the tweeters on the speakers start making some popping noises. It is aggrevating the heck out of me! They are more of a random popping noise, I guess like they pop when the higher highs are played.
Now before I put in the Amp and sub, they wouldn't do this and I could turn up the volume quite loud, with it sounding good, like I could turn it up to 20.
Now that I have put in the amp and sub, I turn it up to like 16 or whatever and I am getting the popping. Which that is strange to me.

So I am thinking maybe the sub is distorting the speakers or something. I don't know.
I have soldered the speaker wires and then have run electrical tape around the soldered connections so they wouldn't touch anything else. So I don't think that is the problem.

But has anyone heard of this? I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything (maybe I was searching for the wrong thing).

Thanks!

EDIT: To add, I am using the stock wiring in my 90 LX, and have soldered the connections to the headunit harness.

Question

Re: Popping speakers:

Is the car in motion when the popping happens? Do the speakers still pop when the car is parked?

not to put you down, but could it be that these are cheap speakers? cause pioneer speakers have always seemed like that

I'd guess that the amp is giving them too much power and thus the distortion

don't think so...from what he described the only thing the amp is driving is his sub.

I think its a combo bad speaker , lack of power.

Ok, I tested it some more.
To clear up, I only have one amp and it is powering the sub.

I tested tonight, and it makes the popping even when the car is parked and the engine off.
I turned down the the input level of the amp for the sub some, so that the sub isn't so loud, and then listened to some music at a loud volume, and there was no popping. When I turned the bass up, either with the equalizer on my mp3 player or head unit or on the input level of the amp, and turned the volume up to the same level, I would start hearing the popping when the bass hit and when there was highs going at the same time. When there is no bass and just a high playing the speakers won't pop. But once the low comes in while the high is being played the speakers will pop at the peaks on the highs.

Now the speakers I have are the top line that pioneer sells which is the REV 6.5 (the 6x9 is better but I am talking about line of speaker).

I never had this problem when I didn't have the sub and amp. Nor do I have it when I turn off the amp.

What I am thinking is that the bass that the sub is producing is shaking something either that is part of the speaker, or is distoring the signal in the stock wires. Or could it be taking to much power out of the Preouts of the head unit and the head unit isn't able to provide enough power to the speakers?
Is that possible? Or are the preouts on a different type of channel or something from the power that the head unit gives out for the speakers.

IMO,I think its the speakers themself. The sound like they can handle the little bit of power the deck is pushing to them. I suggest you you return the "top of the line" pioneer, and get mid range JL Audio. I am using JL TR's. They are mid to low range in the JL market but still higher than the crap you can pick up at bestbuy or any place like that. just my 2 1/2 cents.

COuld be a few things.
First the real easy answer is the bas is cuasing a body oanel in the car to rattle and you think its the speakers. Fade to the rear with the sub on and see if it goes away.

An RCA or the amp maybe bad and sorting the RCA when wiggled by bass. Play the system with the amp on but the subs speaker wires unhooked and wiggle the RCAs and see if you get the pop.

When you have it popin, balance left to right to see if each speaker has it or if its only one of them.

Make sure no speaker wire is touching the cars metal. Subs included.

You mentioned an EQ. On a radio you want all bass and treble set to 0 and turn off all boosting circuits. Is it an EQ or preset sound type. the sound types just induce distortion, leave it flat.

WHat RCA output of the radio is the sub hooked to?

Thanks for your reply 1st MP3,
I will try some fade testing when I get a moment and make sure it is all the speakers I am hearing. I am pretty sure though it is all speakers. But I definitely will try this.

I don't think it would be an RCA problem, because the sub or amp isn't popping, only the four speakers are popping and they are not hooked up to the amp, but hooked up to the head unit.

I think I definitely need to check my door speaker wires again. I have checked my rear deck speakers and they are not touching anything. They are soldered connections and I have eletrical tape around the exposed soldering points.

What I currently have as my setup is an Nomad JukeBox 6gig MP3 player, connected to the tape player of the head unit by a cd to tape player adapter (which I plan on getting a IP-Bus cable to RCA instead). The HU only has one right and left 2v preout which I have going to my amp with Klassic Konnect 5 Meter RCA Kable from knukonceptz.com.

The EQ I mentioned is the EQ on the mp3 player. Should I turn this down to 0 and also the radio eq to 0? And then control how much bass I want from the amp controls? I did have the HU set to a preset (vocal) but I will turn this to FLAT.

The RCA testing I mentioned is very important.

Is the system doing it with CDs or just off the MP3 player?

One more thing to try. Turn the system up so its popping them unplug the RCAs at the amp, don't turn down the stereo at all, and see if the popping stops.

Do the same thing again. Turn the system up till it pops then this time pull the remote turn on wire at the amp not the RCAs and see if the popping stops.

These test are important to rule out the sub amp being the problem. If the pop is High frequency only then the subs won't let you know its there.

You should use the amps gains to match the voltage from you radio for bass. Boosting circuits anywhere just add distortion.

Could the signal wires be too close together?

Ok, I will try the tests you have mentioned and report the findings today.
I don't have a CD player, but I can listen to the radio not just the mp3 player and it has the same problem I believe. I will check again though.

To match the input voltage from the radio on the amp is kindof hard to be exact. Just because it has a dial you have to turn and on one end of it is 4V and if you turn it clockwise all the way it is 250mV. But what the instructions say to do is turn it all the way counter clockwise and then turn it clockwise untill you hear distortion, and then back it off a little. So I do that.

Which is generaly the way everyone does. I only metioned it becuase to meny people see the gain as volume **** which it is not.
