Angry poppin out of gear

OK when I'm cruising along in 5th gear at highway speed it would pop out of gear...put it back in 5th and 2 minutes later...poink

Only does it in 5th gear...and when I was almost home I figured try putting it back in 5th (I was getting tired of buzzing along in 4th doing 80kph) and it was fine for the rest of the way home (like 10 minutes)

WTF

what would cause gear popping only in 5th

it sounds like u got worn 5th gear fork.its made out of aluminum so it goes bad.fork from dealer is aorund $40 and u can replace with tarans in the car.also when doing it its recomended that u replace nuts the hold 5th gear gears and pin that holds the fork.

its not hard as rebulding a trans but its not easy as doing oil change.shpo might charge u a lot because they might tell u need to remove the trans buti did 5th gear fork on 2 cars and never took a trans out.if u had repair manual u will be able to do it.

there is a TSB let me look it up on themans website (FAQ)

http://web2.airmail.net/emann/proteg...000001116.html

Do you have the DX or the LX? I think that's only for the DX (F style gearbox)

err I think that's only for '94, I think you have a 92? But it somethings to know about anyway.

Hey thanks for the link...Mine is a '92 DX. On that page it says "may not stay in 5th gear under acceleration (pops out of gear)" but mine did it at under constant speed. And there's no way in hell I'm replacing all that stuff

Plus if I keep my hand on my shifter (NO not what you're thinking ) it doesn't pop out and haven't had a problem since.

ok, but beware that resting your hand on the shifter causes it to wear (I don't know why it said so in another thread )

Unhappy YOU'RE PLAYING WITH FIRE!!!

What's up protege woooorld, anyway, whatever you do, do not keep your hand on the shifter if 5th gear keeps jumping out of gear let it, and keep shifting. If you dont like it get it fixed. I will tell you why. I had the same prob. with my 94 dx at first it would only do it once and a while. Then the prob. got worse it would jump out of gear every 2 min. on the Expy. I spoke to my mechanic and he said I should get it fixed. But i took my time with it. then one day i was going to work early in the morning so i was going about 80 mph. and of course it kept jumping out of gear. so i thought why not just keep my hand on the shifter to keep it from jumping out of gear. it worked for a while, but then i must of hit like a small bump (roads are never perfect). with my hand on the shifter, when as soon as i hit that small bump it jumped out of gear but i had my hand on the shifter. and it got jammed in 5th gear i could not get it out. because when i hit that bump it came out of gear a little but because my hand was on the shifter. instead of it jumping out, it went back in 5th and got stuck there. and i was driving in 5th trying with all my might to try to get it out of gear to go back into neutral. anyway i finally got it out of gear with both hands. mind you no hands on the steering wheel while im trying to get it out of gear. i must have broke something inside while trying to get out of gear. once i got it out of gear you could not put it into any gear. i was screwed pulled over to the shoulder left the car there and jumped over the fence and went to work. Oh lets not forget to mention it happened right before i pay the toll in front of my job over the fence. i had to push the car through the tollway and the lady still charged me 40 cents. went to work called the tow truck which cost me 150.00 and had it towed to my mechanic. who charged 500.00 to install a new one in with labor. i was out 650.00 so trust me just get it fixed A.S.A.P. it is a lot cheaper than putting another new transmission in.you are going to have to fix it eventually anyway, so it is better if you do it soooooner than later........

I can't see it hurting the tranny in any way, I dont REALLY keep it jammed into 5th, just enough pressure incase it decides to go (I live in a hilly area and popping out of gear doing 100km/h up hill is a bad idea) no funny noises or anything at all.
