Need big time help with my 6.5"s !
Okay - I have no idea what is happening here, but my Infinity Reference woofers (from a component set) look like they are falling apart, and they are only 2 months old.
The rubber surround is "pitted" on the top of both speakers - almost looks like it's disintegrating. I have no idea how this happened - the speakers have plenty of clearance. The only time the door panels were off since the speakers were installed was when my tint was done - but the guy was careful, and this doesn't look like that kind of damage. He used the typical soapy-water spray for the install, but again - I don't see how that could cause what I'm seeing.
WTF? Anyone know what might be happening here?
And along the same lines - now I will be looking for a new set of midrange/midbass drivers. The rest of the Reference set is fine, so I want to keep the tweeters and x-over and just get a new set of drop-in 6.5" woofers. Maybe something with 100 watt+ RMS handling, hopefully for $150 or less. I need recommendations for the drivers, as well as where the hell to buy them - again, I DON'T want to buy a whole new set of comps, just the 6.5s (or maybe slightly larger - I might be able to fit 6.75" or 7" - but 6.5" is preferred.
Looking for help/advice on both issues.
Thanx!

Sorry to hear that, it sure dosen't sound good...one of things that just makes ya go, mmmmmmmmmmmm.
As for drivers, check out the DEI stuff. They sell the drivers alone.

I know you're a HUGE fan of the DEI stuff, mswest, but those look more like pure mid-bass drivers. They only handle up to 1 kHz.
I really need midbass/midrange - something that will have good response up to the tweeter crossover point of 3.5kHz. If DEI makes anything like that, gimme a link (and maybe another one of where to buy them) and I'll definitely check it out.
Thanks for the input.

ummm, guess we'd better find you some 4" mids to go with those MB drivers...mmmm and matching crossovers....
use the retailer locator link on that page to find a shop near you, or any shop i guess and see if they have a component set sans tweets. (the comp set drivers are 40-22khz) Besides, if they do, they'd probably be glad to get rid of them....

Well, I probably won't get pix until I replace them - only because I don't feel like pulling the doors apart .... again. But I will post some photos when I can.
On a better note, I may have found a good replacement midbass/midrange, and would like some opinions - they are from the Rockford Fosgate "Fanatic Q" line. 6.75" mid, 100 watts RMS, 200 peak. Frequency response is 45Hz to 5kHz, with recommended crossovers at 80Hz and 4kHz (the Infinity crossovers are at 3.5kHz, and the 80Hz can easily be accomplished with the HPF on my amp). Plus, I wanted to make new adapter plates anyway, and with 1/2" or 3/4" MDF plates, the 6.75" (rather than 6.5") should be a fine fit.
So - anyone have any experience with the Fanatic Q's? I can get a pair for right around $100, so I'm really leaning towards them - I like the price, but only if I DON'T hear any horror stories.

From what I recall, the surround on the Infiniti's stick out beyond the frame of the speaker. It may be that it is actually hitting the door panel. If you look at the back of the door panel, there is acually kind of like a surround for the original 5x7 speaker where the original speaker will actually fit into. It's hard to describe & I don't have a digital camera. I had to trim the top & bottom of the oval surround to get my CDT's to fit as I used 1/2" MDF as an adapter plate for my 6.5" to fit the 5x7 hole. Hope this helps.

I really like the CDT's. Quite mellow, instruments sound very real & detailled. Imaging in the factory locations are pretty good in the P5. Didn't image that great in my old Miata but, then again, nothing did. I've been very happy with them.

I know the "ring" you are talking about, and I have trimmed mine off completely.
There is no interference inside the door - nothing hits the speaker or the surround. There's probably 1/2" or maybe even 3/4" clearance in front of the speakers.
I'm stumped, really. And oh, well time for some better mids!
