putting on a after market shift know with set screws is much easier than puting the stock shifter back on, only b/c you have to put the threaded section back on the shifter

it will fit (as i'm told). I am getting the sparco tecno shift **** very soon as well. All it takes is three allen screws to secure it in place.

Good luck w/ the shortening and let me know how it went. I am getting mine shortened (with my friend's help) probably next week.

i'm making my own short shifter, i took off the extension, cut the end with the threads off and welded it back to the shaft, then i had the ball where the shifter pivots moved up about an inch, so right there i've cut about 2 inches of the length, plus when i put the shift **** that i just finished making on, it will only go about a half-inch past the threads, unlike the stock ball that goes like an inch up, eventually i'll take some pictures of everything and post them

i didn't do it myself, my gf's dad did it, he works in a machine shop so i'm sure it didn't take him long, i think the only thing that did take some time was moving the ball, apparently he made a cut lengthwise so he could open it a bit to move it up the shaft, then he welded it back, i'll try to get her digital camera and take some pics.

Pacesetter makes a short shifter for all Gen Proteges, You can also get a 3rd Gen MP3 Shifter which is shorter than stock which WILL work. or get a B&M shifter which will cost a fraction more.
Im personally goin to get MazdaSpeed Shifter, Shiftknob and boot.
