how to make the shifter shorter?

I have read in a previous post that some guy was able to shorten the length of the shifter (by taking out the bottom shaft). I am aware that this won't shorten the throw of the shift action.
Now, my question is, if anybody knows how this can be done, is it possible to reverse it? because I am currently leasing my p5, and would like to be able to put it all back together by the time the lease term is up. Any ideas?

Thanks

it probably can't be re-extended.

the material holding the extension on is rubber and you have to melt or cut or drill the rubber to get it off.

i have the instructions (with pictures) somewhere on my hard drive and can email it to you if you want.

that would be great if you can email it to me. Send it to kewltbwoy@hotmail.com. Thanks. Is it difficult to remove? and does it really make that much of a difference in terms of shifting feel?

Yo jowettw can u send me those instructions too...I hate how the shifter is so tall on the pro ES and i dont wanna dish out money for a short throw kit. Besides I find the stock shifter is fine. Throws arent that long.
I tried the SE-R Spec V six speed at the Chicago Auto Show and the throws were just as long...and Nissan calls that a short throw shifter....hah...

here is a tip

when trying to pry off the extention, drill the 2 holes alittle bigger so you can put a screw driver through it, then take a lighter that you would use to say light a pilot with....and put the flame from the lighter on the bottom of the extension. put force on the screw driver acting like you are trying to stist it off and hold that pressure. after about 10 min of the flame on the extension and the constant force, it will all of the sudden, just start turning with ease. and the lighter is alot better than using a torch

thanks for the tip. BTW how long did it take you to shorten the shift?

mp5smuggler March-18th-2003 08:20 PM

another one

hey ill take a set of those instructions and pics that you are emailing everyone. dmbman_98@yahoo.com

Im thinkin ill try shortening the stick this friday, but if it seems risky i wont do it. Also, on the instructions it says its gonna be harder to hook up the stock knob back. I wanted to put a Sparco Tecno knob on instead like in the MSP. Do you know if that'll fit?
