I'm screwed. Both my installer and I have attempted to remove this rear door on my Protege5 and can't seem to get it done. I am afraid I'm gonna mess up the interior if I work at it too much.

Have any of you added new door speakers in the MP3 or the Protege5. I could really use some advice.

You are talking about the rear door panels and not removing the whole door ,correct . If you use the search there is a post on how to remove the front door panels . the rears would be similar

 

the panels remove very easily. I was curious what size speakers were in the doors before I found this forum so I pulled up on the panel and it came off. You have to disconnect the wiring still.

 

Yeah, I meant door panels. hehe.

I tried to lift up, pull, yank and everything. My issue was the handle still seemed to be connected to the door and therefore can't remove the panel completely.

Also, there is a screw on the door latch itself. Pull it as to open the door, and I believe there is a screw there that attaches the handle to the door.

Yeah - check out that "astolfo" site - but also:

Make sure all of the screws are out (they are all fairly visible and shouldn't give you any trouble).

Then, you gotta PULL on the door handle. It is attached with a heavy-duty spring clip. I think the rearward end has the clip - the forward end just slips in and out. Work on that thing - it can be a real bitch - I also thought it was permanently attached until I read otherwise. It's the same deal with the front doors.

Once you get that off, there are other screws underneath it. Get them out, and you should be home-free.

 

Well I installed MB Quart comp component speakers in both front and rear doors. I made 6 1/2's fit and then drilled some holes (unwilling) for the tweets. As for taking the rear door panel off, the best method for me to take that door bar off is to find the seam where you can see that its two pieces. And once you have the visible screws removed, I took a flathead screwdriver and very carefully started pry going from the rear of the door toward the front. It kinda pops and slides at the same time. The plastic used for this bar is very tough, so don't feel too bad, like you're gonna break it, cause like I said its very sturdy. You feel the point between when you think its gonna break and the spring clips giving up their hold.
