Hello,
I want to bring some bass into the system but do not want to install the 12" sub in a bandpass box that I had from my jeep as it eats up to much room and weighs a ton.
I was thinking of replacing the stock speakers in the rear doors with something with more punch.
Namely some Kicker Resolution mid bass speakers.

I am not too concerned with loosing the treble from the rear as I rarely have more than myself and my girlfriend in the car and the position down low makes it hard to hear anyway.
The depth of these speakers would not be a problem as they are less than 3" deep but I was wondering if the stock door speaker hole could be widened to allow for the 7 1/4 mounting hole.
I would be using a 2 channel 60w-rms amp hidden under the seat with its own low pass filter at 500 hz and a the stock HU.
This would retain the completely stock appearance and bump up the low end without sacrificing trunk space for the cross country road trips that we have planned for this year.
Any advice or constructive comments are appreciated as to adding bass but not loosing trunk space or adding theft appeal.

that's a great idea. sorry i can't help much on the mods to the doors but that's a cool idea.

i never did put a sub in my hatch b/c i wanted to keep the space.

i ended up boosting the bass to my rear door speakers and fiddling with the gain to compensate and it sounds ok but nothing approaching great bass.

cool idea. gonna need a lot of sound deadening though.

 

That's a really good idea and I might have to re-think about those rear speakers. Check this out tho...on http://www.audioconnection.com/rmb.htm the 6.5s can take 175W RMS while the 8s take only 125W RMS. Isn't that kinda opposite what it should be?

I think if I were to do anything I'd leave the door cut-out the same and just stick with the 6.5" speaker. Besides, the bass response is the same for both speakers.

Just my 2 cents, but I think this might be a good idea for those of us who want some deeper bass but don't wanna sacrifice any cargo space.

Just looked at a couple of these speakers on ebay and the Kicker Resolution RMB8 seems to handle up to 175W RMS, so www.audioconnection.com/rmb.htm must have a typo in there.

 

I'd suggest doing them in the front doors or the imagaing will be all over hell.

Man I had a helluva time putting my K60's in the rear. I can't see putting in 8"s. But if you do it I'd like to see it. Sure it would be cool

 

I can't imagine how much your door panels would rattle if there was a sub in there...

Get one of those Infinity Basslinks, they sound great and don't take up a lot of space.

 

I dont think it is possible without have to modify the whole door panel and mounting the 8 in it. I tried to put an mb quart 8in midbass driver back there, and the damn window motor was in the way!!!

I installed the Kenwood WOOX in my sister's 01' sedan and it sounds pretty good. Took about 2 hours to get fully installed and set-up. Takes up almost no space in the trunk. I have it mounted on the driver side, behind the rear seat in the trunk. It gives more bass to the factory system but no-where near the amount that my amp/sub system gives off. If you are looking for good base response w/o taking up much space in your trunk, I would recommend this piece from Kenwood......

 

If it might fit, you would really need to tune the speaker, at 8 inches is would still emulate higher frequencise to the point of messing up the front soundstage. On the lower end, it is still not large enough to generate really low frequencies, so it would need to have a bandpass there also. It would take some decent tuning for the desired effect, but it could be done. IF the speaker will fit and you deaden the doors down to kill any resonce. The lows would still not compare to what you had in the 12 inch sub.
You could consider, as negatize and DaleK mention, some of the smaller amps subs, they are very compact compare to a 12, and in a space pinch they could be removed for the space and not require the amp under the seat, so that might save a little room. Plus there are those nice foot vents!
Bass is hard to get without some speaker size and some airspace to play with...
