Good info there.

I don't like how the 323 does not have the MP3, MSP front bumper, rear bumper and side sills. It looks more like the sedans here in America and Canada.

The place where they have the radio controls on the steering colum is where the speed control switch was in my 01' ES sedan. I guess that would be okay. I have a remote now w/my alpine.

Hmmm ... interesting!

After a ton of help from the guys over at mpvclub.com I think I have figured out the entire audio wiring of both the Protege and MPV. There are still quite a few questions left over, but I will have to consult with the parts department at my dealer to find out part nmbers and such for a few more things. Once I have that finished up, I will have a better idea of wether this is even possible. I am getting REALLY close! I have figured out how to control the head-unit externally, the next step is to integrate it onto the steering wheel! Oh, what fun!

It will be a while before I have news. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks again!

Will you be willing to post the pinouts and signalling? This gives me some very interesting ideas

I will be documenting this every step of the way. Once I have this all finished up I will post a VERY detailed how-to so that everyone can give it a try.

hey sylvanlights,

while you're getting that information do you think you could get pinouts or just a picture or any information at all on the minidisk/tape plug on the otherside of the factory HU. I am trying to see if it would be possible to use this for other forms of input... see other thread here: http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...threadid=23976

Thanks

Well, I did some googling and found out that 16 pin connector is for "future expansion", according to an unnamed dealer service representative. There is rumor that that connector is also used to control an external CD changer. There is even a wiring diagram for it, and what is presented surely makes a good case. There is a serial data connection, so the steering wheel controls certainly wouldn't be out of the question. Now, looking at the 323 (UK) ad, it looks like the car has the radio controls, but no cruise control. It even seems that the size, shape, and buttons are the same. Maybe there is an open physical slot available to do this, and there is no corresponding switch assembly on the left of the UK steering wheel we could rig up for steering wheel controls. Maybe, cruise control is not offered in the UK? So Mazda gives the public something else with value added.

Here's the URL for a '93 MX-3 wiring diagram, I'm assuming it's the same as what I have now:

http://www.mx-3.com/tech/audsys/aud_sys_amfm-deck.gif

Here's the URL for the "mystery connector" pinout:

http://www.geocities.com/blhobbs.rm/...o_details.html

I hope this helps everyone in their endeavors.

I found that site as well, which led me to break out my multimeter and pull the stereo out of my '03 P5 hoping they would be the same. Unfortunately they seem to be different as the power +12v and ACC were on different pins.

I'm no engineer and unable to figure out which pins do what as they are not marked on the board. I don't want to try shorting pins like the guy with the 323 did, as I don't want to fry the stereo in my new car.

Any Ideas here would greatly be appreciated

Got to thinking this plug has GOT to be for a changer. So, with my limited knowledge of japanese I went to the the Mazda japan site and looked at accessories for the familia and sure enough there are many options available:

Navigation systems CD and DVD Based
6 CD Changer (NOT the in-dash)
6 MD Changer
TV Tuner
VICS beacon system???
Cd player
Cd and cassette
Cassette
In dash CD changer + MD or Tape
CD changer + TV Tuner

Which just confirms the thought that there must be a way to get a good (not modulated or through tepe deck) line in to the stock system.

Now if only someone here could do a little reverse-engineering!

I have been working on this ever since I posted the original most in this thread ... I am getting there, but have yet to find the appropriate pins for an external audio-in. I will find them eventually though! This thread did start with trying to find a way of adding audio controls, and has veered off into a search for an audio input. I will let you guys know as soon as I figure it out. I have absolutely no need for an external audio source, but I know you guys/gals would sure appreciate it!

I'm on it!

That site that has the pinot for the 16 pin connector descrobes the user's attempt to install an external line-in input. Unfortunately it seems to have a different pin out than the one you are looking for, so maybe that won't work.

The sites that were posted are both for an older model head-unit. Neither of them hold any information for the 2000+ style. I am still working on the pin-outs, and will post my findings as soon as I can!

Thanks for the help so far. Keep it up ... we'll get this figured out eventually!

audio input

i remember seeing a post on a guy who made a complicated mini jack input for his I-pod, search the fourum for a head start in that direction, if someone can take his design and perfect it by wireing in the button on the top that says TAPE/MD i would be highly impressed and also interested. The modulators work decent but i like good sound and i hate dealing with batteries at 85mph on hwy 5.
