Factory head-unit jacks ...

Just wondering what the extra jack on the back of the 2002 factory deck is for. Anyone? Wondering if is used for steering wheel mounted audio controls on some models.

Image can be found here ... http://www.angelfire.com/ab/sylvanli..._deck_rear.jpg

The jack on the left is the factory wiring harness. The one on the right is the suspect.

If that's what it is, I would like to hook up some exterior control of my audio in some fashion ...

Thanks folks!

CD changer controller?

You sure that one wasn't hooked up already? My stock harness had 2 plugs, one for power etc one for speakers. Otherwise IIRC there is a 6 CD changer option, that's probably to hook up to that

Hey D,

Nice pic. I believe it is used for the lower section of the HU if you have a tape deck or MD player there? That is what i thought when i saw it after i took it out of my car. That will be my best guess......

As far as I can tell it is not for the tape deck or MD player as there is another jack on the bottom of the HU where it appears these would attach. Is there an external 6 disc available for the Protege or Protege5?

Let's figure this one out ... could be worth while!

Went through the trouble of disassembling the ENTIRE factory head-unit. Even once I had the PCB sitting on the bench I was still befuddled. Because of the minutely small surface traces on the board I found it impossible to reverse-engineer the "extra" jack. I did, however eliminate the option of this jack being for the MD or tape deck. The jack is all wrong ... and as stated before, the MD/tape would plug into a different jack altogether.

Not sure if it would indeed be for an external CD changer though. That seems odd as there is no sign of having external CD capabilities within the HU. No buttons on the face or hidden inside, nothing on the LCD display (I lit it up to check) ... nothing. Unless, of course, the external changer would use the same controls as the in-dash. But that seems wrong as then you could have two changer receiving commands from the HU. *scratching head*

That leaves the last logical purpose as being a jack for steering wheel mounted audio controls ... is that available on any other Mazda models like the MPV, Tribute, Miata, maybe the Millenia?

Hopefully someone on here knows more about the other models than I do.

Still searching,

Thumbs up

Man D,

You must have lots of available time in order to do this. I am amazed. My theory would be, hell it works fine so leave it alone. This jack must be used for the remote on the steering wheel in other Mazda's. That makes perfect sense. I have many other things I want to do with my car and I find time hard to come by with my schedule.

I am planning on replacing the factory grill a.s.a.p.

Well, get in touch with a Mazda tech and see what they say. Not to say that they will know.

Good luck.....

My factory HU has a hidden button named 'LOAD', under the CD coverplate...

The "LOAD" button is used for the available 6-disc changer. It is simply a module that "plugs in" using the same face plate. All you change out is the little piece around the CD slot, revealing the "LOAD" button. Which, now has a function! I swapped mine out for the 6 disc. This is how I found out. Pretty smart on Mazda's part actually.

The reason I am so enamoured with this jack is that I do in fact want to add steering wheel audio controls if that is at all possible. I don't have a very good service department at my one and only local dealer, and I know that there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum.

I am trying to fix all the little things that irk me from time to time. One is the lack of steering wheel controls. Once I have these all figured out I will move to the exterior. It's the little things inside that you use every day that bother me the most. And trying to maintain a factory look is challenging!

Any other thoughts on this mystery jack, or better yet, does anyone know for sure what it does?

This is an enigma wrapped in a riddle.......

I'm starting to believe that steering wheel controls just might be correct, though I have no idea as to what models used them, or what else this jack could be for.

Might be worth a visit to some other Mazda forums, and see if any MPV, Millenia, etc. owners can verify: 1) The chassis of the stereo is the same (MPV is almost a definite, not sure about any others); 2) this harness is/was hooked up to SOMETHING!

For sure if you can find other well-populated Mazda boards, someone will have replaced the stock stereo and will know the answer.

I'll do some snooping around if I can - keep us posted if you find anything!

Say WHAT?!?!?!?!?

I had NO idea this was an option ANYWHERE!

Oh boy oh boy, sylvan - this is starting to look very interesting....

Since I already have an aftermarket deck, I wonder if there is an integration unit - meaning, some manufacturers make adapters that allow you to use factory steering wheel controls with aftermarket decks.

So - I get that, then buy all the proper components from da Brits' Pro, and about $3000 and 2 years later, I never have to take my hands off the wheel again .

I can't see myself doing this, I'm only kidding about it of course. But it's now a curiosity of mine to know if it CAN be done.

Oooooooh boy.

Nuke is 100% correct. If any of you care to look, the P5 (323) brochure from Mazda UK is at this link (in PDF format): http://www.mazda.co.uk/buy/brochures/mazda_323.pdf

Page 20. Steering wheel controls for audio.

It's a strange looking little unit - almost like a very small turn signal arm. But it IS there. Basically in the same place as our cruise buttons, though the 323 uses the four-spoke steering wheel like the Protege sedan, not our fancy-schmancy 3-spoker.

And the factory deck is identical.

The plot thickens yet again.

Nice catch, Sir Nuke!
