so whats' the brand and color of the paint you found??? THAT is ONE close color!

The paint that I used was the cheap stuff "Plasti-Kote" only like 3 bucks a can. I actually used two colors to achieve the color desired. First I did the main coats with color code 8135 FM and then I gave the entire piece an even "dusting coat" of color code 5317 HONDA. the second color was a little darker and gave it the match i was wanting. Just using the 8135 FM was a close match but I wanted better. I know there are better products out there but I couldn't see paying more for a paint when this piece was never going to be exposed to the direct sun etc...

I am glad that some of you like the outcome of this little interior mod. The good thing is that the way that I was able to attach it did not require any modification to the car, no holes drilled and no glue used. And this thing is very tight and secure.

The only thing I had to buy to do this mod was the cup holder and the 2 cans of paint and can of top coat. The rest of the stuff used to attach was found around the house.

BTW: Added a few pics of my 2002 Sport Trac (True Blue) that I just picked up this morning. Love that new car feeling!!!

The name of the company on the box is Custom Accesories Inc. It was hanging on the rack with all of the other cheap stuff (clip on visor mirrors, Clip on visor notepads, etc..). I live in West Palm, Fl and bought this at the Pep Boys near my house. I have also seen it at Auto Zone. You might not recognize it in the store from my pictures. Before I did anything to it the entire thing was black and below the raised cup holder image was a really cheap wood look sticker that was very easy to remove.

How I installed it was I first removed the plactic trim piece from the back of the center console. When you do this you will notice that there is a small inside lip around the entire opening that the trim piece rested on. At first the cupholder was a tiny tiny bit to big to fit in the recess. I took sand paper and sanded a little off each side until it fit perfectly. Then I took to pieces of 1X2 block of wood and cut them to about an inch wider than the cup holder. On the cup holder there are 4 screw holes and I placed the cup holder in the center of the blocks of wood (half an inch on each side). Do not use the screws that came with it they are too short, use at least inch long screws with the same head size. With the screws screwed in to the wood just enough to stay stuck in the pieces of wood. Stick the pieces of wood in the opening.(you have to stick the pieces in turned on its side and then rotate it to the correct position. Because the plastic bends I had to stick pieces of cardbord between the cup holder and the wood(2 at the top screws and 4 at the bottom scews)Then screw all the screws as tight as you can. This "clamps" the cup hoder in place and believe me it isn't going anywhere.

One thing to be very careful with is to take your time removing the lid (if you plan on painting it). Mine didn't break but it was a struggle and I was worried that it might break.

Hopefully this was thorough enough.

Good luck!

Brian

Great job! I'm thinking about trying this, but how did you attach the cupholder to the center console? Thanks for posting pictures.

Okay, so I was in Walmart this weekend and what do I see, but that cup holder. Cool . It cost me $7.98 CDN and I will be trying it this week following the instructions here. Even if not too many people drink in my car it is still probably useful for holding an extra bottle of water. Don't think I have to paint too much since my interior is black already.

So Jason, what do you need to paint? Is not your interior black like mine? Or does this have to do with the other tread in the regional section?

no it's black inside like yours, but i'd like a little color in the back to spice it up.. the front's got all this fake brushed aluminum color, but theres hardly anything in the back. I figure that cupholder right in the middle would look perfect if it was the same color as the stuff up front...

Glad to see a few of you are thinking about trying this out. Since I live in sunny South Florida and have only been to Canada once, summer vacation when I was a kid, I would have no way of knowing what stores to find the paint at. I did look at the can and they have a 800# and a website. See below:

www.plasti-kote.com

Hope this helps
