car audio newbie needing info
OK guys...I'm a bit new to this board, and wanting to add some subs to my car...I want to add two 10" Diamond Audio CM3's to my current stock unit...I'm not wanting to change anything else at this moment in time...
my question is this...
concerning the two 10" Diamond Audio CM3's...what ohm's should I get? the dual 2 ohm? or the dual 4 ohm?
to my understanding it depends on what amp I get...
it was suggested that I get either a Memphis 500D or a Kicker 400watt amp...which should provide enough power for those two subs on my budget....THING IS...is it a 2 ohm or 4 ohm amp? if I am understanding this at all...if I am not...can someone suggest an amp to work with those speakers and then which ohm of speaker to get?
the reason I ask all of this is...I KNOW that I can get these products from online or elsewhere that will be cheaper than what the original guy qouted me...but he didn't give me ALL the info...that's why I ask these questions...
so, besides the subs, box, amp, amp kit, and wire...is there anything else that I am missing?
thanks guys...I would definately appreciate the help....

I have 4 ohm DVC subs and they are run such that the amp is running at a 1 ohm load. My amp is stable to 1/4 ohm (or so it says), and never has it shut off. Like you mentioned, it depends on the amp on how stable it is. Also, it sounds like you have everything you need if you already have a crossover or the amp you get has a built in one (which you wouldn't need one unless for tweaking purposes).
If it was me, I would get the dual 4 ohm versus the dual 2 ohm because you can wire in a way that the amp would see either 4 or 1 ohm depending on which way you wire it (series or parallel) and how stable the amp you get is when pushing that kind of load. If you are pushing two 10s, I would not use any less than 75 watts per subwoofer to get the most of them.
You can learn about it (series and parallel) by going to crutchfield or soundstream's website and go to previous products and download any of the "SPL" series owner's manual.
Lastly, www.the12volt.com might have some useful information too! Hope this helps!

That being said - you should buy an amplifier that will put out the same RMS power (or a bit more) as your subs can handle, at the impedance you plan to wire them.
Your subs will handle 500 watts RMS. I would suggest a monoblock amp, and the popular JBL BP1200.1 should fit the bill perfectly, and can be had online for less than $300. This amp will put out a max of 1350+ watts. So you can have 1000 watts nice and clean, without overdriving the amp. It'll move those subs safely and with authority.
Also, the JBL can be wired to 1 ohm impedance, however, it will make the same amount of power at 1 ohm or 2 ohms. So your sub choice (dvc 2 ohm or dvc 4 ohm) doesn't really matter. Either voice coil configuration will do. Personally, I would choose the DVC 2 ohm, and wire the subs to a 2 ohm final load on the amp. With no increase in power, there really is no point in running at 1 ohm, and 2 ohms should generally be a safer setup as far as amplifier overheating.
Give things some time, and you'll get the answers you need!

ok guys...well, it's done...my subs are in and boy do they HIT HARD!!!! I went with two 10" Diamond Audio CM3D2 subs in a dual box, a Memphis 500 D amp...I re-installed my Pioneer head unit with my Pioneer 12 disc cd changer...and that's that...I love it...they hit great...thing is..the gain is WAY DOWNNNNN too...so much more potential for this, but we'll see...
next in line is changing out the other 4 speakers...thinking of sticking with Diamond Audios also...like 5.25" components up front and a pair 6.5's in back...not sure about the amp yet though
probably gonna change the head unit out also..sticking with Pioneer though..to work with my cd changer...it still works great..more than likely going to hit the Pioneer Premier line....
suggestions? comments?
feedback would be great guys
