Can I power Infinity Reference with my deck?

infinity reference 6.5"s. they reccomend 60 watts RMS. my alpine deck is only 27 x 4 RMS. is this too little power for these speakers? i may add an amp later but will they work and sound ok with this amount of power?

thanks.

yes, you can run it off the hu (you'll notice a lot of shops run their spkrs off the deck and they sound good) but i've always been a fan of amps. they bring out the best in your midrange.

the reference line is also very efficient and will sound pretty good off that power, but an amp with about 50rms per speaker will sound way better.

thanks fellaz!

i've been thinking of getting new speakers cuz' i am not totally satisfied with my sound with the kenwoods. they are missing something. maybe in the high end? would you guys agree the reference 6.5"s will be better? i want good sound and something that can handle the power if i decide to run an amp when i get more cash.

Yeah, they'll fit--a couple people around here have the Infinity Ref 6.5" in their cars. I'm pretty sure that's what hihosilver has in his.

You might also consider the JBL GTO line, which is based on the same basic design as the Infinity Reference, but which I found cheaper.

the adapter is to make the rounds fit the ovals. i think hey're talking about depth. the ref's should fit as they are not a high end spkr with a huge magnet, but to be on the safe side, contact mazda (website) and ask about the spkr depth sizes in your car.

but i don't see why the sizes wouldn't be the same in both the '02 sedan and p5.

Just a heads-up - my Reference woofers are shot - two months old, and the rubber surround is disintegrating.

Actually, I've had issues with a lot of my Infinity stuff - my Perfect 10.1 sub is blown, and now the reference woofers are phucked up. Getting kind of annoying.

Whatever speakers you get, you will do fine with deck power, but you won't be getting all that the speaker can give. The other issue with any higher-rated speaker (power-wise), is that some might not really give a lot of volume with deck power - this will make you "crank it up" - and possibly send a distorted signal to the speakers. This can blow them easier than overpowering, sometimes. And could even damage the deck. This is not to say that you will blow everything up - but if you are anything like me, you'll be looking for lots of volume. Good speakers run off low-power is not the way to get there.

I think that buying speakers with "headroom" for amps later can be an okay idea, but you gotta be smart with the volume ****. Best bet is to get good speakers and an amp all in one shot, IMO. Plus, using a component set is probably a waste with just deck power.

I'd go all or nothing - but that's just me. I'm sure you will do fine with whatever you choose, but Infinity is not really full of crap when they recommend an amp - that's really the only way to power the speakers properly.
