black headlights, cheap JDM

well i was at home, and bored. i thought, instead of paying @$#$# loads of money for the black headlights from japan or the ones in canada, i thought WTH. I go to home depot and grab a can of hi temp primer and hi temp grill paint. 5 bucks. put the headlight in the oven took it apart, painted it slapped it back together, (there is no leaks, was a bitch to get off, whole clip has to come off) but damn they look factory and well it was 5 bucks.
let me know what you think. PEACE- Trav

When he says they are a bitch to get off, he means it. I had a '98 Maxima on which you could take off the tail lamp lens and convert the turn signals to be clear instead of amber. I did one with no problems, but then I broke the other, bought another, broke it, bought another, and broke it. Finally I just went with one clear and one amber. Looked hella gay, but I was out about $500 just from trying to turn the stupid signals clear. I used a heat gun, not an oven though.

Doin shít like that takes alot of *****! My G/F has an 02 civic and I took the headlights apart to take out the amber piece (can be done on 3g/p5, too). What a painstaking effort but way worth it. Looks hella better than projectors...free too!

How did you get the headlights out without removing the front bumper?

I was under the impression that you had to remove the front bumper cover in order to remove the head lights...Maybe I'm just lost here.

They do look nice though.

ok, first i want to thank you for all your comments, it has meade me feel good, ok here is the run down. first, i always mess with crap just to mess with it. i really loved the black lights when i saw the canadian models come out i was like, "dude, im getting those" i called some places and then i was like bend me over. f that. you first have to take off those screws inside the wheel well and crap. there is a bolt on top of the headlight, a bolt that you have to undo behind the headlight way up top (major bitch to get to, like you can only turn the wrench like a centemeter a turn takes for ever) then there is a clip housing that aligns the headlight and the assembly itsself is held in by plastic dowls. there is also a clip that holds the end where it goes up buy the hood that is attached to the actual front clip itsself, major bitch. if you bust that your clip wont line up and your headlight will look like its hanging off. you have to take the whole front clip off, not really off off the car, but enough to fold it over so you can get the light out because those lights drop another 1.5 past what you can see, those things are huge when you take them out. BE VERY CAREFUL not to bust the plastic, i busted a pin, epoxy'ed it and all is well but you have to love them and go easy on them when you are trying to get them out. dont get pissed, just take your time or thenyoull bust a pin like i did and then get really pissed. use a BIG THIN like a mini scraper if you will to pry between the lens and the housing AFTER you have taken off the rubber drain hoses and bulbs and crap everything you can get off them, in the over for 150-200 deg or WARM for 10 min. the glue comes off nicley, ADVICE: after you get the lens off while the glue is still warm press the glue back in the "bead" of the housing so its even, so when you go to put it back its nice and wont leak. the silver part is held in with 2 scrwes, take those off and then paint it whatever color you want, i was goin to pain thtem yellow to match the car, ive seen that and it looks good. anyways, glad you liked, good luck. PEACE- TRAV

Ok it was 5-10 bucks for the paint, USE PRIMER!!!! LIGHT VERY LIGHT, if it runs you are $@%$% because you cant sand it. it took 3 hours, because i did it by myself and did one light (take off light, bake, add seasoning, some garlic... i mean bake, then pry take al the crap out and blah blah, so 3 hours by myself. putting back together is easy press together stick it back in the oven take out and push together, i used a screw driver and press on the edge to MAKE sure it was sealed. OH the graphics are from www.azautographics.com they KNOW VINYL, they are very nice priced and will custom anything. USE THEM they are BAD ***.
Louie is the man when it comes to graphics. but graphics are a bitch to do, id let a shop do them, bubbles are your enemy.
