Angry Arrgh... Carhop scratched my car..

Visited the local drive-in earlier today to get a frozen dairy treat.. Carhop brings my refreshing dessert to the car.. As she turns to block the wind from blowing my change away, she drags her tray (which conveniently has a BIG METAL CLIP on it) against my driver's door. I immediately sit up and look at the door. "Did I do that?!? OH MY GOD! I am so sorry." she exclaims as I look at the new (only) scratch on my car..

I tell her that I'm not mad at her, but I need to talk to her manager. He comes out, we talk.. and I run to go get my haircut. I return to fill out the report, and the girl is no longer there.. Hope she didn't get fired over this, but I wouldn't doubt it..

Anyways.. They will probably (definately) fix this, but if not, I'm not the lawsuit type when it involves less that $100. What can I use to remove this scratch? I drag my fingernail across it, and don't feel it, so it isn't too deep.

Give me your suggestions-

Maxx Mazda had somebody key his car and he did a really good job (at least it looks that way in the pics) or repairing it.

IIRC, he used touch-up paint (probably from the dealer) and applied it slowly and in layers. Then he wet-sanded it down. The pics look good.

Do a search for the thread....You'll probably have to use his name because I can't remember what the thread was called.

Boy - seems like I'm posting this link A LOT lately:

http://www.carcareonline.com/paint_chips.html

Great info on using touch-up paint the right way.

And, BTW - if you can't feel the scratch, it's probably nothing - and could be buffed out without the use of any paint. Try a detail shop - for $100 you could probably get the scratch buffed right out, and a nice detail and wax job to boot.

I used Mother's Scratch Remover 'goo' to buff out a scuff on my passenger door. It looked like someone with a big *** brushed up against my car when it was dirty (winters here suck). I was able to totally remove the marks in just a couple of minutes. Now I couldn't even show you where they are.

Keeping in mind this is on a silver car

Where'd you find the Mother's stuff? I've been looking for it, but can't find it. I wanna try it out on some ugly touch-ups I did a long time ago.

IIRC, that stuff used to be called Langka and it was an infomercial type of product. However, some have had great results with it.

Edit: Oh wait a sec....maybe we're talking about different products here. I think you're talking about stuff similar to Meguiar's Scratch-X. Oh well.

Yup that would be the stuff. And I found it at Canadian tire. For the trouble and cost it was worth it for the results. I think a bottle (that I'll never fully use) was about 10bux.

Well, I tried my Zymol cleaner wax on it.. Then my Meguiar's Scratch-X. Initially it looked better, but after an hour, I went back and looked at it under better light, and didn't see any difference. I had a similar scratch on my Pro LX that a buffer took right out, so I'm hopeful that I can get the same results with this scratch.

I'm playing phone tag with the drive-in's insurance company, but will let everyone know how it turns out.. (gotta up my post #'s legit.. no post ***** here..)

Forget the insurance! Christ! You can fix it yourself for $5 and about three hours of free time. You said you can't feel the scratch, so it's not deep. You could buff most of it if not all of it out with Brasso. If that doesn't work, then do a search for the post I made on fixing my car. It's very detailed, and will have you on your way in no time. You can't tell anymore by the way. It's like new.

Why bother with all of the insurance stuff anyways? They'll end up repainting your entire door (that's how insurance works) and it will NEVER match again. Just trust me and do it yourself. It may seem like you're wasting your time for someone else's mistake, but that's life I suppose.

Thanks for reminding me Pro_Fan! By the way, what do you think of the new Kiss 96.9?

Sorry to hear about that. Atleast she admitted to doing it. I wasn't so lucky with the porter at my dealer. When he went to detail my car (more like drowning the entire car in armor all) for delivery, he backed it into another car right behind it leaving 2 holes in the rear bumper. He then scrapes up against the wall and puts a deep scratch into the side molding. He swore up and down that he didn't do it, but there was no damage to the car when we looked over the car before we did the paperwork. I rubbed my finger over the scratch and there was evidently some plaster residue left. Needless to say, the dealer is fixing this for me, but now I'm stuck with a rental car. Not only that, I had to drive 100 miles round trip just to get back there. I only have 300 miles on my car. 250 of it was from visiting my dealer.

Maax Mazda,

I really like your Axis rims...how much did you pay for those?

I also have a red P5 so I am always interested in what other owners have done to their cars

Hawk,

The rims and tires were $1800 CAD all in. Don't try to fit them on your car though. Nothing but a headache. The wheels had to be machined out because the wheel hub on the rear is too long and the hub ring on the rim isn't deep enough. We enlarged the depth of the rim, and had to order some special hub rings to get the damn things to fit right. The ONLY P5 you'll see rollin' those rims I'm sure of it. All told it took 2 weeks to get that mess sorted out. Now, they look great!

Cool

Maax,

Sounds like a lot of work....haha....but they sure do look good against the color which is always nice....

No pics of your interior or your engine though on your site....do you have any, I would be interested to see what the inside of your ride looks like as I have the same color.

Also, no tint for you, or if you are going to get tint, what were you thinking of for tint?

Hawk,

I'm thinking 5% for the back windows, and 20% for the front windows and the moonroof. My interior is stock right now, but if you send me your email address, I'll shoot over some pics of my engine bay for you to look at. I'll bet you'll not find one as nice looking out there! (In my eyes anyway.)

Well HELL!

Tried the Scratch-X, Tried the Brasso, Tried the 3M fine cut RC.. No difference. I couldn't catch my nail in the scratch... Body shop couldn't either.. So out comes the 2000 wet/dry followed by the 3M and Scratch-X... After 1st try scratch is almost totally gone except for the first 1/2" or so.. Gave it a day to see if it comes back, it doesn't, so I hit the 1/2" of the remaining damage with the 2000 w/d again.... HOLY ****.

Good News- Scratch is totally gone.

Bad News- So is a 1cm by 2cm patch of my clear coat most possibly. Actually probably smaller than that, but to me it looks like it's huge...

Was following the instructions, used water with a bit of car wash soap for lube, let the paper do the work, no pressure, etc.. Clear coat on these cars must be VERY thin, I know it's usually only 2/1000" thick, but I didn't think it would go like that. It actually looks better than the scratch, and I guess lesson learned.. I hit the spot with wax and it really isn't too noticable.

I'm looking into what it would take to repair it.. I'll take a picture in a bit to let you guys see..

T
