Alarm Recommendation

I have a 99 ES and I'd like to get an alarm, but I don't know a lot about the field, so if someone could give me soem recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to spend around $200 max. Thanks!

hope you have a good hook-up, as you won't get a real good one for $200 (unless you plan to install it yourself)

I can only recommend 2 brands, Viper and Clifford and they will be more than $200 installed. Although the Viper 300ESP can be had for around $250 installed and it's still a great alarm.

Also, please use the search function (top right corner of page) there has been alot of discussion about different alarms.

I'm talking $200 before installation fees.

unless you do it yourself.... if you want to spend under 200, you can try ebay.. i got a crimestoppers alarm from their for only $80USD, installed it myself (12hrs lol) and it works perfectly, it has additional options and addons that you can get for it. IE window module, additional shock sensor or prox. sensor. stuff like that

I know one that I will be purchasing when I find it is a alarm that 'beeps' your keychain(I can't remember the name of it) . Letting you know that your alarm is going off so you can get your bat out and have a chat with those nice people.

If you don't need "the best" alarm, and just want something functional, look into Prestige systems by Audiovox.

They are certainly not "top of the line" by any means, but they get all the jobs done.

Mine has all the obvious features: Siren (with or without horn), starter disable, remote entry (controls the power locks), etc. I also have a remote starter.

The whole system should be under $350 installed, including remote start. You could probably knock off $100 or more for no remote start.

One of the things that the higher-end systems offer is the ability to add more features - the cheaper alarms do not have many spaces for "modules" - so becuase I have the starter and remote entry, I can't get something to roll my windows down by remote or any of the extras. I've got two "slots" in the alarm brain, and they are already used.

Compustar is great and it also comes with a pager to let you know how your car is doing. Quite a few people on this site have one too (including myself).

Well, DEI is still the only one with a 2-way remote WITH code hopping! the new 554V (thats the part number not the model number, that escapes me right now) is identical to the 550ESP, just the receiver, antenna and remotes are different...since i plan to swap our present 550ESP in the Jetta
