2000 Protege wiring harness and kit

Hi,
I've looked at the thread for the harnesses and kits, but I'm not 100% of what I need to buy for a 2000 Protege ES with the Premium factory system.

If I'm reading the chart right in that thread,

The wiring harness I need is either going to be the
Metra: 70-7901
Scosche: MA02

and the kit I need will be either
Metra: 99-5510, 99-5512, or 99-5700
Scosche: FM2157

Are those the correct numbers for this car and system? which do you guys like better Metra or Scosche?

Are the special tools needed to remove the factory deck in that year?

Also is there anything I need to know ahead of time before removing the factory deck?

Thanks
Chris.

If you want to know what model number for sure, go to crutchfield's site and enter your car there (year, car, make, etc.). I would use coat hangers in first post to remove the factory head unit. They sides "snap off" with a small standard screw driver or something small enough to wedge under it. That will expose the holes you need to get to. You can use coat hangers or two sets of Ford/Mazda keys which can be obtained by an auto part store (like Autozone). Push 'em in and then slide the deck out and you have a gaping hole ready for your dash kit and after market head unit.

I've been to crutchfield's site, and they don't show any listings at all for that car? They do for 2001, but not for 2000.

Does anyone here have a 2000 protege, and have replace the factory head unit?

I know that the Metra harness is different in the 2001 and up. It took months for them to get one made! <Bastards!> As far as the radio itself, I imagine it would be pretty similar as far as removing. Did you email them? They have stuff you can't normally find on their site and they will reply with a model # so you have it to reference it or purchase it. I didn't check out SoundDomain as far as wire harnesses, but did you try them out too?

I checked sounddomain too, and they don't show anything. I emailed them, and waiting to see if they write back.

I can't believe its been so hard trying to find the harness and kit for this car. I thought it was a pretty standard car?

Another site to check out is www.msprotege.com It is very similar to this one. In fact a lot of us here are members over there. I don't know off hand, but they may have info on what harness and kit to use. If you emailed Crutchfield, they usually get back with you the following day. I don't know how fast Sound Domain is.

Hello again,
I tried to register at that other forum, but I never got the activation of my account email...

anywho, I emailed crutchfield and asked them if they do have the harness. They emailed me back and said that they do have it, and this is the part # 120707901 .

OK,
but they also said that, there is no kit needed for that car? Its a double din size radio in there, there has to be a pocket or something to take up the space from the tape deck. So I emailed them again, and they finally wrote back and said, that they don't carry anything. I would have to contact Mazda, if I want a pocket!!!!!

I bet Mazda charges an arm and a leg for something stupid like that, and I bet they don't have it in stock. So, does anyone know if the install kit for the 2001 will work? All I need is a pocket.

Thanks again
Chris.
