03 Pro ES Optional Stereo System
Well, I was washing my car the other day and I noticed something interesting...my car has 8 speakers....uh, I thought it was only six...at least according to the Mazda webpage.
Is it because I have the optional 6 CD changer that I got an upgraded system or do the 2 tweeters not count as speakers??
Also, is it true that this system is made by Pioneer? And does anyone know how many watts it has?

You only have 6 speakers. I am guessing that you saw the speaker grills in the rear doors and assumed there were speakers there. A lot of people think that but really there is nothing behind the grills. That is were the rear speakers go in the protege 5. They use the same doors and door panels for the sedan and 5 to save money. Anyway if you really wanted you could put speakers in the rear doors.
The speakers are pioneers and they say 25 watts on the back.

I got my protege before the p5 came out (2000) and I have the grills in the back too with no speakers in them. So yes they are the same doors as the P5 but the protege came out first so does it maybe have to do anything with convenience for adding speakers? Or am I just completely ignorant and they used the doors from the familia in Japan which was maybe out before '99??

Aha, i see now. Well i got my hopes up for a second there. Oh well, I still think the system is good enough. Could use a bit more bass but whatever.
So the system all together only has 25 watts?? Thats so ridiculous compared to like the Spec V Rockford Fosgate system and the MS system! Im still surprised it eeks out a decent amount of sound.

Whenever a factory car says 6 speaker system, they include tweeters for some reason or another. The speakers are Pioneer speakers, but crappy Pioneer speakers. For some, factory stereos are good enough (and I have a female friend with an Altima with the Bose system and it does sound good for factory), but for others they are mere temporary speakers only to be ripped out and replaced to enhance driving pleasure. Surprisingly most auto makers use the cheapest in audio equipment even though they have come a long way in sound quality. Whatever works with the owner.
