Decent Info regarding ES/P5 5 lug suspension and brakes...

I searched for a while and couldn't find any info on this site about it...and it is not in the FAQ...

3rd gen 01+ ES's/P5s/MP3s basically have 93-97 Probe GT/MX-6 LS/93-98 626 V6 brakes...We have the same 10.2" front rotors/10.3" rear rotors, same calipers, same front control arms (still not positive on that) and front knuckles...Please anyone with a way of aquiring more info on this add to it...

this gives Protege ES etc.. owners a couple of new options for brake upgrades...

For some reason EBC still hasn't released green or red pads for these Proteges yet, but they do make them for the latter cars...So if you have a 4 wheel disc 5 lug (this could also apply to the front 10.2" 4 lug LX/DX guys but not positive) you can get them..

Anyone that has used these pads will know why this is cool...I just installed a set of front EBC Greenstuff pads on my P5, and they are silly...I had used them in the past on different cars but forgot how awesome they are...I have never used pads that bit so hard when completely cool...They don't need any warm-up period and have an excellent progressive coefficient of friction that rises with pedal pressur, which means they are very easy to control...Track dudes can go with the Redstuff's that feel more like the OE pads untill heated up significantly and then they resist fade like maniacs...

I ordered mine from Tirerack for 80 bucks for the full front axle, I just ordered for a 93 Probe GT rather than the P5 (still in the saved car thing) They are identical to the stock P5 pads dimension wise and fit without a single problem...but EBC(In my experience most after market pads don't anyway) does not include the little dimples to remount the anti-chatter shims, however they still fit the stock retaing clips without a problem..

This also allows you to install any big brake kit that will fit a Probe GT on a Protege...AP, a big name in Europe, makes a 13.5" 4 piston front brake kit that looks incredible...But I don't care about that as much, they are expensive and the stock brake system is more than adequate for blistering my 215s...Just pointing out that the market for P5 and some other Protege's brakes has significantly grown...

Also now junkyards are littered with cars that may have direct replacement parts for front suspension pieces...Control arms, knuckles etc.. should also fit. This also applys to people looking to upgrade from the smaller older ES/LX/DX 3rd gen brakes, there are a lot of other Mazda's that have the parts you need...

as far as the rear brakes...the calipers and pads are the same as well, but I am unsure about the knuckles...Those older cars didn't have the TTL suspension and I am not sure if the knuckles on the non-TTL suspensions will fit properly...I am still looking into that

Don't ask any stores or anything if those cars pads fit ours...I tried that and they all said no...The tire rack dude said that the only Mazda part Probe GT's had was the engine, which is false...Just order them and I assure you as long as it is a second gen Probe (SE's and Base model 93-97 models had the same front brakes, just drums in back rather than discs), they will fit without any problems at all...

Again if anyone can add to this please do, if any mods want to sticky it for reference that might help...And Edwin if you want to look into this more to further verify it, it might make a good addition to the Brake info on the FAQ...

I am confused by your post. You are saying that 01+ ES/P5/MP3 have bigger rear rotors than front rotors?(in your first paragraph, 10.3rear, 10.2front)

And Im confused about your 3rd paragraph where you say that some protege cannot get EBC brake pads. And then you say that they can.

I have a 2002 LX 4 lug, discs in the front and drums in the back protege. I believe I have 10.2" rotors in the front, while same year ES/P5 have 10.3" rotors in the front. Is this what you are getting at or am I confused?

P5's have 10.2" front rotors and 10.3" rotors in back...It is a little different that the rear rotors are slightly larger, but they are not vented, just a thin solid disc...

Your situation is what confuses me...I think you have identical front brakes as the P5/ES, but yours are 4 lug...so I am not positive on that, but I doubt Mazda would use completely different calipers as well as the rotor...They are the same size, but I cannot tell you to go ahead and order them becuase I am not positive they are EXACTLY the same...

the best way for you to find out for sure is to go to a Pep Boys, Autozone, or wherever else they sell generic cheap pads and order them for any 3-97 Ford Probe GT/SE (Just make sure it is not a 3.0L V6 Probe, those were available in the First Gen body style, but for some reason a lot of computers bring up brakes for those cars in the 93-95 models years...From what I can tell no Probe GT after 92 had a 3.0L V6, but Autozone's computer claims otherwise...) take them home and in 30 minutes you will know if they fit your Protege...If they do ANY brake pads that fit a 2nd Gen Probe will fit your LX...If you don't want those pads you can return them and get whatever you want...

I am sorry this is all confusing, and I shouldn't have said that some Protege's cannot get them...The only thing I am 100% positve about is that a P5/ES/MP3 can get the EBC's...and if you are 100% sure you have a P5/ES/MP3's front brakes (the same other than just having 4 instead of 5 lugs, which I am not) you can get them too...Also remeber this is only applying to your front brakes, EBC does not make shoes or whatever they are called for drums...and Probe SE's had drums in back, but identical front discs as the GT model...

Installshield: Hmmm... I know that a guy around here has a 2000 Protege with a 1.8 engine AND has EBC greedstuff pads up front and drums in the back.(also 4lug) I will ask him if he has the same size rotor as an 01+ ES/P5.

I will post his answer later.

Thanks guys...

From the info I have, I think only the 01+ Protege ES's etc. got the full Probe GT brakes...The LX/DX models of these years recieved Probe GT front brakes (technically Probe SE brakes, same front brakes with 9" drums in back)b...But Probe GT's are 5 lug and LX/DX Proteges have been 4 lug since the 3rd Gen was released...and that is why I cannot swear that other than that the brakes are the same...

Pre 01 Proteges, in any trim, did not have 2nd Gen Probe brakes in anyway as far as I know...they had smaller 9.2" or something front rotors with drum rear brakes...This would make sense in a way becuase in 99 the newer body style 626 (which shared brakes with the Probe/MX-6 before 99) came out which was upgraded with 10.5" front rotors, and no Mazdas were using the 93-97 Probe GT brakes, so Mazda could easily meet the demands of Protege production with the Probe brakes for 01...The brakes were already designed, just needed different knuckes to fit the Proteges...

but all these parts will fit an older 3rd Gen protege...meaning a pre 01 owner could aquire a wrecked 93-97 Probe/MX-6 or 93-98 626 and switch out all the brake components, this is significant in that your options are no longer just a 99 or newer 626 as a donor for larger brakes...

Very Important!!!

I just recieved the 93 Proge GT EBC greens from TireRack for my 2003 Protege5. They DO NOT work.

I did lots of digging this evening.....

The 2001+ 2.0 ES/S and DX/LX Protege have the SAME (if you have DISC all around) brake rotor and pad as the Protege5.

According to the new 2005 EBC brake parts catalog, the following are the EBC GREEN parts numbers for the 2001+ 2.0 ES/DX
FRONT: DP21409
REAR: DP21700

Be warned that the Probe pads MAY NOT fit your Mazda, they did NOT fit mine.

Great info. everyone. From what I've gathered by looking at the parts fiche, all '03 Protege DX/LX/ES sedans and all P5s have the same front calipers and caliper carriers which are BP7H-33-61X and -71X. But only the ES sedans and the P5s have 5 lug and rear disc. My guess is that by the end of the Protege's life, Mazda just simplified the PNs and made all front calipers the same (except, of course, the Mazdaspeed which I've read has different front and rear rotors and calipers). For whatever reason, '01 and '02 cars have different caliper #s, but I think the rotor diameter is all the same, the only difference being 4 lug vs. 5 lug.

I'm looking into converting my '03 LX sedan to 5 lug and rear disc so this is all very interesting to me. My current plan is to pick up P5 rear hubs, knuckles, calipers, brake lines, and e-brake cable and simply press out the 4 lug hub in front and replace it with a 5 lug hub. Any ideas on this or suggestions?
