What about the 1.8L?
I feel very left out with everyone getting good stuff for the 2.0L but leaving the 1.8L alone. I've got a 1.8L and really want to make it fast. And I'm willing ot put a fair amount of money (scholarships) into the car. But it seems like i hsuoldn't even bother because only the 2.0L engine has good stuff. Can i get anything crazy for the 1.8L?
Thanks
Thanks

I figured that I'm only gonna be young once, and by the time I am done school and have a real job I'll probably not be into these cars. So I willing to spend aobut 5 grand to make the car as crazy as possible. Mainly foccusing on speed. I already have a nice sound system.

Do test mules get their stuff done cheaper?
I knew I should gone into Mechanical Engineering. Then I could probably do my own crazy Stuff. Now I'm stuck in school for longer and won't learn anyhting aobut mahcines. Stupid Medical Field with its attractive High paying jobs. I found a place like 2 hours away that does protege turbos and stuff but i gotta check if they do the 1.8 or can change the 2.0 turbo to fit my car.

Getshorto check out this page for some parts: http://www.srmotorsports.com/protege.htm
Check the whole page, there is not alot for the 1.8l but there some stuff that you could start with.

as with ANY modifications....make sure you do your homework first. Don't just assume you can throw a turbo on something and make it fast or reliable.
Prep work is the key to success in anything you do.

The 1.8L is a good motor. I would prefer a 99-00ES versus the newer 2.0L models. *Supposedly* adapting a 2.0L turbo kit for the 1.8L shouldn't take too much work, but I don't know if anybody has tried. Personally, I would like to see it.

Well, right now i have a stock engine except for the air intake and although its a 2000 it has 30 000 miles on it so its pretty good and my family has owned it since brand new and we haven't ever had a problem with it. So if i get a turbo that is made for the 1.8L installed professionally wouldn't that make it pretty reliable?
I odn't know much about cars except for hte fat that i want it to go fast.

Well, a good way to get some basic knowledge on turbo systems is to read the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.
Having read that, with some help, I think you'd be able to have a pretty reliable *ZOOM-ZOOM* car.

yeahi have a 1.8L car too
in fact we dyno really close to the same numbers as the 2.0L puts out....
also i think it was cuz of our power curve, we can match, and beat the 2.0L ina race...
i beat a 2.0L P5 in my stock '99 (and i missed 3rd, and still caught up and beat him, me missing third is like grinding it then just forcing it in so its like a 1 second thing.... even tho the forcing it is bad)
alot of the things available for the 2.0L can be adapted to fit the 1.8L
because they basically the same engine, just they stroked the 1.8L to get it to be a 2.0L, well thas what they basically did, changed other things liek tranny etc...
our 1.8Ls are a little more rev happy than the 2.0Ls, they liek to rev...
i dunno anyone with a turbo on the 1.8L, and i dunno how good the engine performs (liek numbers it puts out etc etc)... but i would liek to know
but our 1.8Ls are a great engine, i prefer them over the 2.0Ls aswell

Yeah 1.8L!!!! I FInally found a turbo kit that says that it will fit the 1.8L. BUt I don't know how good it will be since it says that it fit the 1.6, 18 and 2.0L.
http://www.turbo-kits.com/protege_turbo_kits.html
I used Dyno 2000 and chose the 1.8L mazda engine, and at hte fly wheel it says its around 100hp. BUt then i did a few mods like boosting compression, adding a roots blower, and cam's and it bosted it to 340hp. Yeah!! THat wuld be amazing.
