Which vehicle would you buy: Protege ES or Protege 5
#16
Depends on what you want. The P5 is moreversatile and distinctive in appearance, but the sedan is cheaper and some people don't like the distinctiveness of the P5--you can see there's disagreemeint about which looks better.
I wouldn't have even considered an ES when I was buying, I needed a hatch, or wagon, or whatever.

I personally prefer the sedan for its appearance (I'm not a big fan of the big fog lights on the P5). The only thing that could be better is the antenna. You also get the added benefits of lower weight (not much) and about a grand in your pocket. I don't think leather is an option on the ES yet though. So I would get a P5 if I wanted the leather. The strut tower brace on the P5 does not really seem to do a whole lot to help the handling. I had a P5 for a short term loaner while I was waiting for my car and they both handle about the same (small differences, you can feel the extra mass on the P5). My guess is that the strut tower brace just helps neutralize that extra mass. It definitely did not give it a clear advantage.

I have been shopping for Proteges for a while now and will pick one up soon. As far as the leather option, there is one. Its the Protege SI. I saw the car in person at a dealer in Toronto(Dixie 401). The leather seats are also heated. The price for it was about 2500 on top of the ES, but also included all the options!

If you're on a budget, the sedan is the way to go. You get good handling and a decent engine for relatively cheap. If you want a nice interior than youll need to spend more money.
P5 is good cause you get the nicer bumpers but you can get a sedan for less.
I would, and have gotten a sedan.... and I love it.

everybody will turn their heads if you buy a p5,but someday there will be so many of them they wont be cool and original anymore. The appeance of the toyota Fatrix and the Vibe (both ugly) will make the sportswagon scene go crazy. If you modify an ES (with good taste of course) people will be more impressed.Anyway its lighter, cheaper and It handles really really well. Are we all circuit racers?Do you really race with your brand new car during weekends?
my opinion is influenced by the fact that I couldnt afford a P5 and bought an older touring model joke
I bought my car cuz I loved it,and thats exactly what you should do.You have the feeling for the P5? Buy it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re:
Get a P5...if u get the ES ppl would just think u got a 2nd hand car or so on!!!
If u are not getting P5 , try get the corolla, lancer or civic coupe!!!
Becoz the look better and get a better resale value!!!

I did some checking and for US spec models (when I looked) leather is only an option on the P5 although you can get the 4-speed shift-o-matic on the ES. Kind of sucks for us sedan guys but we can still purchase dealer leather (in two tones with stitching). Oh, and our cars look better.

LOL dude.
I actually just bought a ES with GT package from another dealer (Woodbridge) as I thought the 401/ Dixie guys were trying to rip me off (and they were).
So I asked my new salesman about the ES SI, and apparently it was just a ES with GT and leather option. The dealership made up the SI part and put it on a sign.
So it's official, there is an leather option for the sedan.
