Trade-In and Purchase advise needed
Recently I had an unfortunate incident in my '00 Pro LX.

I took it to the dealership for repairs, total estimate is $5100, using the "rear clipping" method of repairing it. Mazda does not endorse this type of repair, and I am not comfortable with it.
I walked next door to the Mazda showroom and started a discussion with a friend/sales rep about my options on if I wanted to trade it in on a '02 MP5. The LX has 52000 miles on it, and has been maintained well. It has a few little door dings, but was in overall excellent condition before the accident. The dealership will take it off of my hands as-is for $9000 and take the insurance check and repair it.
Is $9000 a fair value (US dollars) for the trade, considering the mileage, present condition, etc? I'd love to get into the Protege 5, they have a beautiful Mica blue one that matches the LX.. Drove it (bad idea) and I really want it now. The rep is going to give me a great deal on the car, will share it tomorrow when I get it on paper.
Give me your opinions-

well first off, and most people feel the same (i think) after an accident its never the same, you start to not care as much for something you once loved. (sorry about the accident)
for a 00' you werent going to get more than about 11-12 from a dealer in the first place, but i would try and hold out for a little more because they are also getting 5k from insurance.
and only if u have the difference GO GET THE P5.
and also try not to pay over around 18k-18,500
i dont know what most people got there's for but i payed under 17k

The P5 I am looking at is stickered at $17.7k, and my wife and I will be getting the graduate rebate, and the $750 rebate, as well as probable promotional deal since my wife's work does things for the dealership. I see us getting into the car for around $16K.
I did a check online as to the trade value of my LX, and I got numbers from KBB of between 6000 and 7000 dollars. Locally, you will see Protege LX's selling for 9000-10000 at the dealerships, with less miles, and their original rear clips attached.
I feel that the $9000 is good since the car is what I would almost consider a total since they will be totally attaching the entire rear clip of another Pro onto it to repair the damage.
$9000 for a really messed up Pro, and I walk away with a new P5, financed at a lower interest rate, for probably the same monthly payment.

The damage must look a lot worse in person than in the pic....sorry to here your baby got crunched....its always a sad day when this happens to ANYONE....
but I beleive your dealer is giving you a good deal...take the 9K and run with it all the way to the bank...and get the P-5!!! The Blue P-5's are very nice colors....and if the sticker on the one you are looking at is 17,700....you should be easily be able to get it for 16K....go to edmonds.com and you will be able to find out EXACTLY what their invoice price is for the car...includeing any options it might have....then work from there as a final price for the car.....you should be EASILY get the car for $300 over invoice.

Before and After!
Before:
After:
Nuke- I was skeptical of the damage myself until I saw the car minus the interior and saw the ripple effect in the floorpan. Both rear quarters were pinched, the trunk floor was pushed upwards about 10".. I was impressed how the car took the impact, and how I managed to drive 100 miles home at the posted speed limit without even feeling a difference in the LX.
Miss the LX, but every minute I drive the 5, those feelings fade.

MAN OH MAN....you found ONE HELL OF A BODY SHOP!!! lol
believe me......I feel you will NEVER EVER be dissatisfied with the decision you made....the P-5 is one heck of a little car...and its a true head turner. Good luck with the new ride.
