The actual stats in the brochure for the 2002 P5 says top speed is 172 kph. But I have driven mine up to 192 kph thus far, that's 120 mph for those of you in the States. Oh and that's in an automatic, I don't know what the manual P5 is capable of.

Ummm, speed is ALWAYS linearly related to RPM in a car with a conventional manual or automatic transmission. The engine is connected to the wheels through gears with a fixed number of teeth, and the wheel rpm can always be expressed as a simple formula related to engine rpm.

Wheel RPM = Engine RPM / (Tranny Gear Ratio * Final Drive Ratio)

This is always true unless the car uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in which the gear ratios can be varied. With fixed gears, vehicle speed can always be expressed as a ratio related to engine rpm.

I think his calculations would be correct for a typical 5 speed manual transmission in 4th gear, since that is usually a 1 to 1 relationship. IE: 1 revolution of the crank equals 1 revolution of the output shaft(s). Since 5th is an overdrive gear, less than a 1 to 1 ratio, if it was physically possible to go 140 mph in that gear engine RPMs would be less than 6600.

RPM's would be lower than 6600 rpm in a P5 going 140 mph. Here's some formulas:

RPM = (mph * gear ratio * 336) / Tire Diameter
[NOTE: "336" will be different in metric units.]

Protege5:
Tire Diameter (195/50R16) = 23.7"
Final Drive Ratio = 4.105:1
5th Gear Tranny Ratio = 0.755:1

(140 mph * 4.105 * 0.755 * 336) / 23.7" = 6150 RPM

I've gone 122-123 MPH in my sedan. It was on a flat road and with no wind. Then, I ran out of road and I had to slow down. I think I could have hit 125-130... maybe...

Note: This is according to my speedometer, however accurate.

Man, off to transmission land. Just wanted to add my 2 pennies:

1. There is no law in the US that says that a vehicle must have a governor. Two examples of vehicles without are the Mustang Cobra and the Corvette (by the way, Made In America). The Corvette Z06 can nearly top 200 (thats MPH).

2. Governors suck. Especially on cars that can actually get past them.

3. I haven't hit mine yet and from what people are saying it does not seem possible to hit it in an untuned Protege (if it exists).

4. Every governed vehicle I have ever owned or driven has had a limit that was set to a point the car could actually hit easily.

5. Generally performance cars with manual transmissions are less likely to be governed than vehicles like trucks and mass market vehicles.

Walight - I think the only hill big enough to get a stock Protege 2.0L up to 140MPH is Mt. Everest, so:

Okay....I stated it a LONG time ago...and NOW I am going to end it.....

Whether or not you want to believe it...there is NO GOVENOR on our cars....a rev limiter, yes...a govenor to limit speed? NO.
