Yes it can... for thousands more than its worth.... you are better off selling your car and buying a manual version. but YES it CAN be done.

Well how expensive it is depends on your parts and your labor. If you can find a wrecked Protege in the junk yard then things may be a good bit cheaper, but since most of the Proteges are still on the road things can be quite expensive. Why not call Mazda and ask how much some of the required parts cost.

(These are the required parts on a Ford Probe GT which uses a different manual transmission and automatic transmission than the Protege, but still a good reference as to what parts are needed for an atx-> to a mtx swap)

compiled by: Chunchoy14 and M(y)x6gr8ride

1) Manual Transmission (only v6 and must be 93-97 mx6/probe/626)
2) Flywheel (KLO3,k8,fidanza)
3) Clutch
4) Throwout bearing (release bearing)
5) Pilot bearing
6) Clutch master cylinder
7) Clutch slave cylinder
8) Clutch hydraulic tube and hose or rr clutch line
9) MTX halfshaft (Driver's side and passenger side)- Some believe you only need driver's but i replaced both with a new one anyways)
10) MTX Intermediate Shaft with Carrier bearing(the bearing should be one the intermediate shaft)(93 has 3 hole mount, 95 has 2 hole mount get the appropriate year)
11) Shift Linkage and rod
12) Shifter- I used a pacesetter short throw shifter
13) Clutch pedal assembly
14) Brake pedal assembly
15) MTX Transmission mount(I replaced all 3)
16) MTX (4cyl or 6cyl will work)Chassis bracket for top side transmission mount
17) Brake master cylinder (whole master cylinder not required---just reservoir from mtx is required because
the reservoir has an extra port for the clutch master cylinder)
18) New MTX axle seals
19) MTX starter
20) Tranny gear oil ( Must be GL-4)Redline recommended
21) 2 cotter pins
22) Mtx tranny to crossmember rubber isolator

Thank you!

So can anyone pin down a ballpark figure for what it would cost?

for such a new car, I discourage it... trade the car in for a manual one... because parts are so expensive.... finding a wrecked car will be very hard also
i was in a wreck a few weeks ago and my car is just getting out of the shop. It's been redone with all Mazda factory parts but wouldnt it still compramize the value of the car if I were to trade it in?

Yeah, I was wondering if it could be done to change a car's tranny. However, I agree rather than switching tranny's, get a new car. I would recommend the "manumatic". gives you the liberty of choosing automatic, and then manual when ever you want to. I would get this for my next car. But, for about 1000-1500 bucks, it is not worth changing the transmisson
Anybody agree with the manumatic?

I have the "Sport" Auto and am in somewhat the same boat. Had a '96 Nissan four banger pickup with a manual tranny before owning the P5 and have a 70 mile roundtrip commute everyday, thus I bought the auto because of all the lousy traffic I sit in. But since owning this car I have grown to love driving so much that I find myself craving a manual. The sport auto is OK, but it's no replacement for a manual tranny.

Now some questions in theory.

If I get a turbo, (Spooling or Flyin Miata) my warranty goes out the window. When the tranny goes I'll be liable for replacing it myself. At the point does the cost of switching to a manual still prove prohibitive? About how much more (aside from the $1000-1500 in labor) would it cost to switch the car over to the manual? (just something for me to think about while I debate getting a turbo) Even if I get a turbo and I burn out the tranny still not certain I would want to switch as I read that autos and their tall gears can actually be quite accomodating to turbos. I do realize I'll have to put in a new Torque convertor when I install the turbo to the tune of about $400.

It really comes down to how much you pay for the manual transmission parts and labor. You may have to pay a little more or a little less to convert it to a manual transmission rather than replace is with a rebuilt or new auto tranmission.

Voiding warranties sucks

Well yea you would void your warranty which could suck. Not that our warranties are all that great but, I have a 1999 Protege that really didn't have any things go wrong with it that required the warranty while I had it. So I went ahead and did my Turbo thing with FM. And for the other, I too thought about a Manumatic when buying this Protege but it was a replacement for my SVT Focus which was a 6speed and totalled by a drunk. I don't have a problem with traffic and shifting even though the traffic is horrible here due to all of the old people. With the turbo i do have to be careful I don't take it above 3000 RPM when my turbo's starting to cook. Otherwise i'm gonna be into the back end of the car in front of me. You may have the advantage with the Manumatic and a Turbo but I chose the 5 speed because its better suited to how I drive.

I was stucj with the same problem also. I went to the dealership (do not do this) and they quoted me $4,000-$6,000. They told me it would be better to trade it in instead, but now since I'm almost done paying for my car, I'm just going to get a second one.
