Stronger engine vibration after CAI.

After installing the CAI to my Protege5, I notice there is a stronger vibration comes from the engine everytime I start the engine.

And a little more jerking appears when I step on the gas in the first gear.

Is this normal?

Perfectly normal. Mine was like that as well, but you'll get used to it in no time.

Is the vibration accompanied by rattling from your intake? Perhaps it could be your intake hitting the fender wall or another part under your hood.

As far as the hesitation goes, mine did that as well, until I cut my intake. But that's a completely different story...

wesleeptheylive:
the high pitched sound is just the engine breathing out (de-pressurizing)... it's perfectly normal...

misbehave:
if your P5 is an AT, you might want to make sure your intake isn't contacting the master brake cylinder... this happened on mine and i put a couple of really good gouges in my SRI before i found out what it was and readjusted my install...

My intake is the shortram one, the one that put the cone shape filter at the place where the old filter box were.

This might sound stupid to you, but I want to ask, where is the master brake cylinder? Do you mean the brake rotor/disc?

The master cylinder is the large black thing right by the battery, attached to the firewall. You'll see the brake fluid reservoir attached to it.

it's usually the first bend of the intake that has problems (the piece that attaches to the throttle body aka. the hole where your old intake went to). What I had to do to fix my shroty in my AT is actually assemble my intake starting from the other end (i.e. the piece that bolts onto the engine) and work backwards. That way when i got to the piece that attaches to the throttle body i just turned it away from the master brake cylinder as much as possible and tightened it like that. Haven't had any problems since and that's including emergency braking (which shifts the master brake cylinder a couple centimeters forward)

Yes, I just opened my hood today and found that the tube was touching something.

The air pipe that connects to the engine, at the first bend, it touches a silver color metal part that locates under the container that carry the brake fruid. The edge of that thing was actually rubbing my pipe. I am lucky that I found this out early cause the rubbing is going to make a hole on the pipe soon.
So, I moved the pipe a bit, but there wasn't too much room to move around.
If I move the pipe too high, it will start touching the thin tiny hard tube that connected to the brake fruid container.

Let me show you in the following pics.
The parts that touching the pipe.

The rubbing parts before I move the pipe.

The little tube that is not very close to the intake pipe.

Anyone have good solution to solve this?

Yup, the point of contact IS the master brake cylinder. You might wanna make it so there's more space around the tube for it to vibrate freely. 1/2 inch or so should be enough.

Do you mean the silver color metal part? Or the thin tiny tube?

you just have to play around with the fit of the intake... i know it's pretty tough which is why i actually disassembled the whole thing and reassembled starting from the front instead of the back... took me about an hour to get about 2cm clearance... then i put a tiny bit of white heat-proof grease on the exterior of the pipe to see if it still contacted anything and i haven't had any problems since...

you know, i didnt know what the master brake cylinder thing was. thanks for the pics. Mine DOES touch and rub it. Im gonna try and gho fix it right now. But, when i was installing it i remember it was already a tight fit right there and i was having problems. I did even assemble it backward like you guys are sayin, from the engine outward. I got that same short ram too, the ebay one. Well see, im a little concerned though. Does this thing move forward when a brake? like in which direction should i try and give it room?

YES!!!
the sucker can slide forward around 1.5-2.5cm's... on my initial install I had left about 1.5cm gap between the cylinder and my shorty and i still got 2mm deep gouges in my piping. Only after building the intake starting from the filter did i manage to get enough clearance to just barely have it not scratch/rub...
