Not long ago Douggie posted a fix that involved de-soldering a couple of microswitches. Has anyone tried it ? Does the AC not come on at all in the "feet" setting if these switches are desoldered ? And what about the AC light not coming on in any of the three "defrost " positions ? Does de-soldering remedy this ?

Maybe a better and less risky solution is replacing the 2002 circuit board with a 2001 or 2000 ? This would be my pick, if it's possible, since there are several wrecked Protege's in nearby junkyards.

if you want to disable your AC you can just rip that small peice of metal out inside your HVAC controls. if you need defrost just hit the AC button
