so then the catback for the 1.8/2.0L still follows the same exhaust path in the 1.6L for the most part?? If it does then you are right and that's definately what i would do.......as long as money permits next month.

Very good write up

Thanks a lot for your write up. One of the best I have ever read. I am now very interested in this exhaust. How about some follow up info. How are you liking the exhaust now? Have you really got a chance to unwind it yet? Thanks.

Thanks, Rishie
I have a 1.8 and got the RB cat-back for the sedan. Unless they have two separate systems (one for ULEV (CA) models with a secondary cat and one for regular sedans with one cat) and the y sent me the wrong one, the RB kit will not fit a 1.8 or a 2.0 unless the car is ULEV and has the secondary cat. The Pipe with the presilencer is not long enough, duh.

As far as I know the 99-00 years are like the 01-02 years in that CA models have 2 cats and the rest only have 1. Unless by some miracle RB has the piece that makes it compatible with a single cat 1.8, I will have to have a pipe fabricated.

Ikea_Boy -

Hum, I must have been in la-la-land for a while... I think the Racing Beat is absolutely great! I've owned a lot of systems over the years, but this comes closer to my "ideal" than any of them have. There really hasn't been much change in the character of tone since the installation - a nice growl when you're going through the gears, or wind it out, but then it quiets down as soon as you're cruising.

It's the best of both worlds for me; I want to know I've got something besides stock on the car, but I don't like my ears to bleed either. Also, my impression of flow is that the Racing Beat leaves you room to grow your horsepower without restriction - it's wide-open for a stock engine with just an intake upgrade.

Cheers,
John

Cool

Thanks for your reply. I had a Thermal on my Civic Si. It was pretty good. I had a RP400?, I think on my 89 RX7. It was wwwaaayyy to loud. Everyone knew I was coming before I even got close I am really not interested in sound at all. I mean I will deal with it, but I am looking for something a little more quiet. I think I will get the RB exhaust when I have the money. I am installing my first 2 mods this weekend. My Kartboy shifter and bushing and my AEM intake. I think the exhuast would be the last mod I would ever do to the P5.

Hey Evil Homer and anyone else in the greater Toronto area,

We have a local guy who has a shop in Pickering who works on RX-7's and other Mazdas. His name is Dave Diedrick and he owns a the shop called Mazdees. His specialty is RX-7's (He actually modified the motor in my 1979 RX-7) but he can help you out with your Protege's. When it comes to performance this is the guy to talk to, he knows what's available and what's coming. If you're interested check out his website at :

http://www.goodmedia.com/mazdees/

Or drop buy, he's usually got an RX-7 he's working on that he races.

Nice Write up!!!

It was good to hear another Great review on the Racing Beat Cat Back! I have been looking into this system for a while, and am almost positive it is the one that i am going to go with!!!

But like Evil Homer said.. there is no point in doin any mods with winter coming around the corner...

Just save all winter and get a bunch of stuff in the spring!!

you could even buy all the mods, and just have then installed in the spring time, if you have a basement or some kind of storage area.

but yeah, i'm just gonna save up some cash, pay off the car, then do some light mods.

i'm only looking to do the aem short ram, and RB cat-back.

good write up! I just wanted to say thanks as well. I've been looking at getting an exhaust for the wife's car and I think this is the one that I've been looking for. Thanks again!

Thanks guys! I don't think you can really go wrong with the Racing Beat as far as an all-around system goes. And the thing is built like a tank - I mean it's like industrial strength stainless throughout. Not a bad thing at all.

There's definitely louder systems out there (MazdaSpeed & various others). And at the other end of the spectrum is something like a Remus axle-back - it'll improve flow as good as any other axle-back system, but it cost like a cat-back, and where's the shine and sound?

I think the RB would be an acceptable choice for a "wife's car," though texP5's wife thought it was too loud and he had to sell his. (If he'd installed a MazdaSpeed on her car, she would have taken it off herself and beaten him to death with it...)

Best advice I can offer is to save your coin and buy something worthwhile. And when you install yours next year, I'll give you an update on mine!

Cheers

Has anybody ordered it from the Advanced Imports (banner above)? If so were they satisfactory? Any other source recomendations? Anybody done just a K&N filter instead of an intake?
