Question About P5

Hey everyone, I have a 1990 MX-6, fairly modded out, but it might be time to get a new car. I have a dumb question but I did some searches and I never really got a real answer, did the P5 come out in 2001, or did it start production in 2002?

Also, I am concerned about the quarter mile time, and I have read in here that some people dont think the P5 would make a very good quarter mile car? Do you think that the car could ever run a 13 sec or better?

Thanks for all your help.

Matt

It is a 2002 Model, that came out in 2001. I bought my car Sept. 9th 2001.

If you got the $$$ anything is possible. IMO FWD cars are HORRIBLE 1/4 cars. If you want a good 1/4 car buy a RWD solid rear axle.

The new line of Mazda's are AWESOME road handling cars. Wonderful stiff springs, if you like that, Indepent Rear Suspension, and the 16" wheels give a nice feel to the road IMO. I hope what I've said doesnt come across as being a dick, just tryin to help ya out.

Hi Mazdaspeed0020 and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

if you are talking 1/4 mile car as in DRAG RACER....no....our cars in stock form are slow.....they are not impressive....but if you are going bracket racing....that doesn't matter now does it. its consistancy that counts. HOWEVER....if you are going to be racing in twisty roads for 1/4 mile...that is a different story. lol

the P5 handles like a slot car....there are many cars out there that cost as much as 5 and 6 times as much that do not handle as well as they do.....

I think to get these beautiful little cars down into the 13's you would spend a substantial amount of green.....and not sure how streetable of a car you would have afterwards.....

if its a 13 second street car you are looking to have....you may well be looking in the wrong place.

13 sec

i think our cars (MP5) can get into the 13 sec range after you drop in a turbo kit running at a higher psi then the mazda speed, say somewhere aroung 8 to 10 pis( i think that is possible w/o building the engine out).also getting the j-spec cams and j-spec manifold as well is a given. a better clutch to hold the new power. with these add-ons you should be able to reach the low 14's maybe. now to def get into the 13 sec range all you have to do is add some NOS.
with these 6 mods you should be able to reach the 13 range
turbo w/ front mount - roughly 4k
cams - 180 per piece
manifold - 550
nos kit - depends on what one you want but figure round 800

MP5smuggler, I am with you on this one, I know that I could take my MX-6 into a 13 sec quarter mile run with a turbo and running at a higher psi, so I figured that if the MP5 has 130 hp, which is 30 more then my car stock (not including turbo, n/a) then if I were to turbo my car, fuel pump, clutch, some internals so I dont melt everything, I would come to believe that this car could run pretty fast down the track, and being that it has a little more of a wagon type design, it could be a good sleeper too. Thanks for your input.

Also, TrexPro, how much did you pay for your MP5 in 2001? Thanks for the info again.

to get a p5 in a 13s 1/4 mile, you need a turbo or a 50 shot wet nos. all the other stuff will just make the engine last longer or go faster, but like everyone said, this car isn't designed for the straight line race, if you wanted a 4 banger stright line car, should of got a neon.

50 shot

a 50 shot wont do it youll only run like 14.8 in the 1/4.
now with the cams and manifold and the nos you can get to the low 14s i am sure
the turbo is just the icing on the cake
or when you have nos and a turbo does that make the nos the icing i keep forgetting!

oh as my friend tells me about his turbo..... turbo lag is just the polite way to let someone feel good before beating them.

I think there are very few cars that are designed just for drag racing, but with the turbo itself along with some internal mods, and redesigning the chip, I would think that I could run a 13 second quarter. But I guess I will have to do all that stuff first and then run it and prove that just because people say this car isnt made to go straight fast that it can happen.

straight line

13 isnt fast compared to what some cars are running outa the factory, WRX the new SRT Neon (its still a neon though), but it will beat the local rice boy civic with the fart cans and hugh wings on the trunks!!
putting the right turbo on is the biggest problem as i see it.
FM's kit is a basic well laid out setup that gives a great boost of power for the everyday driver who likes to play around on the side. their setup is 6 psi.
Spool has a few choices on their kits. the stage 1 is like the FM kit while the stage 2 is a bit more beefy! couple that with a front mount intercooler and then drop in some forged piston and rods and you will have a kit that can make some serious psi!!
now the biggest problem is the ECU. there isnt much out there for a stand alone that i can find. ive seen and heard people talk about the Haltech one but i cant really find anything out about it.

as for me, i am going to go with the spool stage 2 and the front mount and take it up to 10 psi and i think ill be turning about 230ish, maybe. at 10 psi i dont think youll have to worry about the ECU much only have to play with the timming to richen the engine up a tad.

I have a the loaded version, everything except chrome wheels and automatic tranny, I paid base model price for it because I had a yellow one on order for about 4 months.

I understand that 13 sec quarter mile isnt screaming fast, but it is respectable. I was just wondering if you guys thought the car could even get to that stage, and it seems like some people do, and I am sure with enough work and money the car could do faster times then that.

I dont know about the WRX and SRT Neon running 13's from the factory, they need some more work done to them to get to that stage, but they are produced so that you can do minimul work to them and reach that stage.

I personally think it would be sweet to have an MP5, with its good looks even though they are not too aggressive, run a very quick quarter mile, while also being somewhat of a sleeper car. Plus, everyone has a Honda, Acura, or Neon, I personally would like to be different while at the same time beating the **** out of the Civics and so on.

Yes, it could get into the 13's, but why? It wasn't designed for that and wouldn't be very practical if it did. Why waste your money on a little 2.0L 4banger 5door with a good suspension when you want a fast quarter? Go buy something with a V8, get a 100 shot of nitrous, some big Mickey Thompsons, and have yourself some fun passing other little Japanese 4bangers like us.

The thing about it is that I am a import guy, I am not a V8 guy, I want a car that is going to surprise the V8 guys and beat them too, I have a 2.2 right now, and its a 1990, so its about time for a new car, why not try to make this car into something that no one else has really taken it to. Sure I could take the easy way out, but what kind of fun would that be? I am not sure why you guys are not supporting the fact that I want to do this, I know that the car has a good suspension, but what if I made the car fast as hell, and since it has a good suspension then I could race it on a track and so on. It doesnt matter anyway, you guys are intitled to your own opinion, I guess you guys have different plans with your cars then I have with mine. Ohh well.
