Is Protege5's Engine made by Ford?

Today, I went to a Honda dealer, just to see how a Civic is. The dealer told me Mazda's engines are made by Ford. Why would I listen to him.. I don't know.. but I know there's some connection between Mazda and Ford.

1. Who makes Mazda Protege5's engine?

2. What does this mean?

3. What's exactly the connection between Mazda and Ford?

4. Honda Civic is way too common and Protege5 looks better, but performance and reliability wise, Civic seems to be ahead. What made you guys choose Protege5 over Civic or a Jetta?

Mazda is head of small engine development for ford. Im pretty sure that means that all the small 4s are made by mazda, but some of the sixes are made by ford and put in mazda cars.

i beleive Ford owns about 30% of Mazda and yes, most Ford 4 cyl engines are Mazda based. But rest assured, your Pro5 is a Mazda engine. (and all Protege's for that matter)

I think you got it backwards, V6s are made by Mazda...i think it was 2nd gen Probe GTs that has a KL08 2.5L (along with the 626 and MX6) The 2nd gen escort GT has the same BP engine as the 1st gen Protege's, hell the EGT is a twin, but for the body panels and interior. I think it's the B2200 and the Ford Ranger...look similar.....how about the old Bravada and Explorer....not sure, but i think the Ranger had the Mazda engine, but the Bravada had the Ford....but maybe it was the Mazda V6 not sure....

but so far the scheme has been, Mazda engines in Ford cars, not the other way around....i could be wrong though.

Talking Mazda motors

Yep, the Protege is all Mazda. The Ford focus motor is completely different...

Ford does make some of the V6's now. For example, the Tribute engine is the 3.0 liter duratec from the Taurus.

As far as Mazda's relationship with Ford (and all the other partners - Jaguar, Land Rover, & Volvo), Mazda is heading up ALL 4-cylinder motor development for the entire family. The existing 2.0L motor will be suplemented with a new 2.3L engine in the next Protege/Protege-5 version due in early 2003. The chassis is being designed by Ford (for use in the Focus, Protege, as well as Volvo S-40 sedan, V-50 wagon, and V-55 mini-SUV), but the Mazda will have better suspension, keeping in line with the excellent handling characteristics of all Proteges.
Per Mazda, Mazda is designing the new chassis for the Protege which will be shared by Ford and Volvo...Ford is not desinging the chasis...And the new Protege will not be based on the Focus platform....

Thumbs down 90&00 Protege

I was going from what I was told by a Mazda employee who's been dealing with this stuff for awhile...That is what he told me...

He said the new Protege will not be based on the Focus platform...

So, you can believe what you want, there is simply a disagreement...so which is right??
