Protege Mazdaspeed Intake
Hey everyone,
I just bought a 2003.5 Protege Mazdaspeed with 5 sp trans. Thinking about getting a cold air intake. A few quick questions.
1. What is the performance improvement? I heard it increases about 10 horses?
2. Injen or AEM better? Does it affect the Mazda warranty?

No it doesn't increase 10 horses....
Its all basically up to preference, and yes, the dealer can blame just about anything on a modified piece of the car. The Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) is part of your regular intake.. very spendy.. and pretty delicate.. you have to be really careful with it when you are installing intakes...

intake isn't ther problem on the MSP....exhaust, intercooler, ECU.....well maybe the ECU should be listed first....then the exhaust....then the intercooler and plumbing...
LEt's just say this....if you want a screamer you're going to be doing some work and you might as well give up on that pipe dream called a warranty.
Just expect something is going to blow and be prepared to fix it. If you can't afford to do so then you shouldn't mod your car.

An upgraded FMIC (Front Mounted Intercooler) will greatly cool the air going into the engine. The turbo generates a lot of heat, and the air coming out of it is hot as well. The intercooler is placed after the turbocharger to cool this hot air down. The stock MSP intercooler is tiny and inefficient, and gets heatsoaked very easily. An upgraded intercooler will help an already modded MSP very much. Gains will also be made with a stock MSP, but an FMIC is a rather costly item and produces larger power gains with an already modified car.

you're looking at between 800 and 1200 dollars for a full front mount kit. It, an exhaust and an intake will allow to run some more boost a little safer than on stock gear. I'd stay at around 9 or 10 psi personally, thats where I would feel safe on that car.

yeah, thats what I meant.....a direct IC swap for a mazdaspeed turbo car.....
the hi-boost turbo kit positions the turbo in a different location so someone with a MSP wouldn't be able to use a hi-boost IC kit unless they have one specially tooled for the MSP like Wagner does....

Actually you might want to check HP figures on an MSP...changing how a turbo engine breathes is a LOT different than changing how a NA engine breathes...adding a true CAI to a MSP might just give you around 7-9hp if not 10

it is a MSP specific kit...and from the pics i've seen, it looks VERY well put-together...like their turbo kit is.
