Smile probably a stupid question

I want to buy a used mazda protege maybe a 99 or 2000 but i want one with the 2.0l engine. Is there a specific model protege that comes with this engine or does it come standard in all of them

check out the faq for more detailed answers... but the 1999 and 2000 protege models come with the 1.6, and 1.8l engines. the 99/00 dx's come with the 1.6, same with the lx. the es in 99/00 have the 1.8l's. if you want a 2.0l, you need to get a 2001 or 2002. all trim levels have the 2.0l, just different options.

Still not quite right. The 2001 DX and LX had the 1.6L. The 2001 LX 2.0 and ES had the 2.0L. Mazda didn't make the 2.0L standard across the board until 2002.

In summary, here's the complete list:

1.6L ZM-DE:
1999-2001 DX and LX

1.8L FP-DE:
1999-2000 ES

2.0L FS-DE:
2001 LX 2.0, 2001+ ES, 2002+ DX & LX

Please note that this applies to U.S. models only. The Canadian models are different.

In Canada, for 2002, they still offer the 1.6 L engine on the SE (DX) model. The 2.0 L engine is now standard on the LX and ES.

this is just in canada right? the dx's here are all 2.0's. even the 2001's. at least all of them that i've seen. in 2001, they had the 2.0 stickers, and i swear i'd seen some dx's with that. and, my buddy drew has a 2002 dx, which is the 2.0l
