i got given a KnN dry type for my Bday and i was thinkin of putting it in till i read some posts about how the 1.6L 99 protege plays up when u put one of these...

is there any truth to this?? and also.. i will be making a custom box for it in the location its at now... and heatshielding it from engine and running a pipe to the front of the car (yeh i know i'd rather just stick it on.. but the Australian laws regarding car modifying is sometimes rediculous and i wanna build it up as legal as possible)

what are some things i should watch out for?? and anyone who has put an intake system had any troubles?? please share...

The main problem is with the maf. It gets crazy leaks. This causes the car to throw a cell. The dry type filter wont be a problem the wet kind are known to cover the maf in oil which makes it very unhappy but still it would work.

What some people do is they cut the maf holder out of the air box. and use that with custom pipeing. Then its fine.

What's a K&N dry-type filter? I thought all K&N's were oiled, cotton fiber types.

this one the material is just likie the stock filter... but in a a cone shape....

in Australia the EPA doesn;t like havin oil'ed type air filters... ehehe whinny bitches

maf = mass air flow meter ye??? (same thing as AFM right?)

cool so as long as its the dry type it should be cool.... i ma do it sometime after exams and let ya;ll know whas up...

Interesting. I don't think the dry-type K&N filter is available in the US.

ehh sorry hehe just one more question...

the 1.6L AFM can handle the extra air flow?? coz i heard in some cars (not protege's).. once they put in a intake system the AFM caint cope with the extra air commin in and goes a lil haywire...

i doubt this will be a problem for mycar.. but though i just ask..

What type of stock intake do you have? MAF sensor or VAF meter and H box? In either case, the PCM should be able to compensate for any additional air flow by increasing injector pulse duration. Just make sure there are no vacuum leaks and if you have the H box, make sure you leave it in the system or you'll experience a loss in low-speed torque.

stock intake?? well its got the big plastic thing with a small intake in the front of engine bay... which connects to the airbox with filter and AFM built into it...

all i wanna do is just replace the big black one @ the front with a POD... and remove the filter in the airbox... that kinda set up.... (the actual filter will not not be boxed... *i found out its legal to have it unboxed as long as its secure*.. so i will be putting it somewhere, where it gets exposed to alot of cold air hehe)...

That should be fine, then. A standard intake mod where you're eliminating the intake snorkel and air box and attaching the pod filter to the AFM (or MAF sensor). Although some people attach the pod filter directly to the AFM, it's not a good idea since the intake air, as it exits the filter exhibits turbulent flow and can therefore disrupt the metering function of the AFM. Connect a length of pipe, as straight as possible between the filter and the AFM to help convert the turbulent flow to a more laminar flow and improve the AFM metering function.

Also, it's good you plan to duct ambient temperature air to the filter as HP varies as the square root of the change in the absolute temperature of the intake air.
