P5 Dilemma
#16
If you're contemplating a car in this price range, look at a WRX. It's faster than an Altima, has small-car handling and agility like the P5, and it comes in a wagon if you like the 5-door look
BTW if you want to spend about $23k, there are all sorts of cars that are a lot faster than a P5, but that's what you get for another $7000. The main attraction of the P5 is sporty handling and looks for an economy price. No, it's not smokin' fast, but you get what you pay for

About a month back Autoweek had an "Autofile" on the Altima. This is an owners survey and brief article for those of you who have never seen one. Anywhooo, more than a few of the Altima owners said fit and finish was crappy. One guy said it was built like an "average American car" and he didn't mean that in a good way. The extra cash spent on an Altima might tickle your right foot, but overall the Mazda's gonna give you more for your money.
My 2 cents.

The more I think about, the more sense it makes for me to get the P5. I just keep remembering how great the test drive was, and I keep reading how much fun you P/P5 owners are having all the time. I also like the idea of keeping $200/month in my pocket!
Let me again say Thanks! to all who responded. This is a great board!

Ex-Nissan loyalist!!!
I've had Nissans the last two times out. A sweet 95 Mazima, most recently a 98 Altima SE. I just traded it in (got beans, BTW), and bought a 2002 Pro5. I love to drive now. I test drove the 02 Altima with the 4-cyl and it was nice but I don't think a car that cost $200 more a month is comparable. Save your money and buy the Pro5 and use the money you saved to buy mountain bikes, kayaks, skis, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc, for many months to come.

Check this out: You want performance, handling, and sport, right? I've been trying to decide on which vehicle I want to buy new within the next 2-3 years. The best platform I've found with mass aftermarket support and fulfills all three categories is: the WRX 2.0l turbo! You can't beat the price, it handles great, and it's damn sporty. For $5k more than the P5, you get a drivetrain that just won't quit and aftermarket options to make 350whp with bolt-ons. What more can you ask for? Yes, I've looked at the Volvo turbos, the Audi's (nice, by the way), and the VW's, but you can't beat the WRX.

uh huh
i might of bought a WRX if i could drive standard.
but it would of been a stripped down one without many options
my mom really wanted to buy an altima for me instead of the Pro5, but we would of only been able to afford the 4 cylinder, which isn't a bad engine, but it would have that crap interior, and still would of cost more than the Pro5.
So basically the pro5 was a perfect match for me.

If the WRX was only $5K more up here, I would be probably buy one too. However, a fully loaded P5 would be about $12K(!!!) LESS than a WRX in Canada. I agree it's a nice car (got invited to drive one at a preview) but it needs to be 'dressed up' to look really nice (rims, tires, interior bits etc.).

Ah, well.... If you take a look at my homepage, you'll know I'm about perfomance over looks, but the blue XS Engineering WRX in turbo magazine looks awesome with the C-West body kit and some nice wheels. Check it:

I'm going to buy a new one in 3 years (have to plan) and put one of the AVO turbo kits on it (front mount I/C) and drop about 360WHP to the ground. That makes me smile
