Just wondering why the Mazda sedans don't have trunk locks. I mean, all you have to do is break in and pop the trunk and whammo, your **** is gone! That sucks. I know if a thief really wants your ****, he'll get it any way, but that would be one more obstacle to deter him. Mine is a 2001, but I don't know if the newer ones are the same way as well as the older Proteges.

Most Sedans do not have that function because most people assume that "if they can't see it, they won't steal it." But what negates that is when someone is blaring their stereo system or puts expensive items in their trunk with a lot of people around...

Are you sure there is not a switch inside the trunk to lock out the use of the interior release?
I can't remember the last car I saw that DIDN'T have one. Even my 93 Miata had a lockout switch for the trunk.
you sure you checked everything? How about the manual?

My 2002 ES trunk locks. The seatbacks have locks on them to keep them from being folded down and the trunk latch has a little yellow switch on it that over-rides the in car pop lever. Right now, the only way a thief is getting in my trunk is with a crowbar or a blowtorch!!
I don't know if this is optional equipment or not because I just bought the car optioned as it was.

Thanks FES, that is good to know about the rear seats too. My amps are on an amp rack, so I usually fold them down for ventilation, but on small daily trips, I leave them closed. I will have to look for that yellow lever tomorrow before going out. Thanks!

new protege sedans have a trunk lock, the switch is located on the trunk latch (where the trunk door connects to the car) you can turn that switch on and the trunk release won't work from the inside but this is only for newer protege sedans im not sure about the old ones

don't your glove boxes come with key locks? my ghetto *** 94 did . though it's physically impossible to stuff a woman's dufflebag excuse for a purse, i put my face plate in there for good measure. on the first gen's, the principle is completely without logic, you have a button release for the 60/40 fold down seats and a lock mechanism to prevent them from being opened from the inside, but wtf does that do for somebody trying to get into the trunk from the outside? you can pry those damn things open with a hammer, crowbar and a little generous persuasion. if somebody wants it, they'll take it, leave it at that.

that reminds me, when I got my 98 I couldnt get in the trunk for at least a month, the dealer was supposed to get me a key made. I thought there might be a dead body in there. But it turned out to be the cold weather in January - it works fine now. No Dead body.
