Question New to this forum and need help....

I am looking for help and deciding if the mazdaspeed 03 sport exhaust will fit on my 01 Protege. Most importantly I would like to know if it is loud...I have an aftermarket exhaust on the car. But its too loud for me and would like something alittle tamer. I have heard its loud and then not loud at all. i just dont want to spend the money and time and not like it.

thanks for the help suggestions etc....

Welcome. I'll tell you the search tool in the forum is quite handy. Or even the thread "suggested mod list" could help. I believe all sedans after the almighty '99 are interchangeable as far as exhaust goes. My greddy is fit for an MSP...

Yes, all 3rd-gen sedans are the same for the axle-back.
Be careful, though---the "Mazdaspeed" exhaust is only fairly loud but many who have it say it has an annoying drone at highway speed.
If you want something quieter in an axleback look for the Mazda "Sport Exhaust" which is made by Racing Beat and much quieter.
You can try some of the dealerships located in our vendor section or contact Ken at Protege Garage.
Or as a shameless self-plug I have a few extra exhausts coming in from Thunder in Taiwan
(again, see vendor section)---you can get a full cat-back or just the muffler only. The N1 style is pretty quiet with the silencer in.

i thought that i had heard there were 2 types of mazdaspeed exhausts... the dealer said he could get a mazdaspeed sport exhaust for me for $184. Who makes the first one that is loud? Borla? I do want the quieter one and just the muffler, and asked the dealer if he knew what the brand was and he couldnt tell. I asked if it was racing beat but I am sure that is what it is. Thanks!!

Some of the Mazdasdpeed were made by Bosal but pretty much all of the ones I have seen in person or in phots are the Borla.
I have honestly tried for two years to get definitive info about who made what when and it's only been a source of argument.
If the person you are talking to said it's the Sport exhaust then it is probably the Racing Beat.

Yes....it does seem to be back and forth and I have made myself pretty confused. I heard on another forum that indeed there was a racing beat and a borla made. But I guess the racing beat is not made anymore, just the borla. I have heard the borla is fairly loud, but I have been talking to my local dealer. He said that he can order the " 03 Mazdaspeed sport exhaust."I asked him if he could get the brand name and he couldnt, so I am going to call tomorrow and see if he can call the place that he is getting it from.

They ship from some central warehouse. Maybe they can get a nice guy on the phone and have them open a box.
I'll see if I can find the part # I ordered...

I have a p5, so the information I have may be different for the sedan. I have the Mazda accessory sport exhaust, which is also known as "Mazdaspeed axleback." It has a 4" round tip with "mazdaspeed" etched on the side. This is the sport exhaust you can buy as a dealer accessory. I know for sure it's not made by Racing Beat, not sure whether it's borla or bosal, but it is very loud inside the car. It has a droning sound at highway speed, as well as under acceleration going through the gears. It's doesn't seem to be all that loud OUTSIDE the car, as a friend borrowed my car, and when she came to drop it off, it didn't seem all that loud. It seems the problem is the exhaust resonates at the same frequency the car's cabin resonates at, making the inside of the car sound like the inside of a subwoofer. I've been working on sound deadening my car, and nothing I've done has made any difference in the exhaust noise inside the car.
The racing beat exhaust may have been offered as a dealer accessory early on- it's not really clear. The racing beat axleback was the exhaust used on the MP3s. The mazdaspeed protege used the racing beat axleback, but included the other pipes, so it was actually a catback on MSPs.
So, if you order a mazdaspeed axleback or mazda accessory sport exhaust, you will almost certainly get the pipe not made by racing beat. I don't know about the sedans, but in a p5, this system is loud! (inside the car)

ok...thanks for the info. The aftermarket muffler I have on my car now is loud at highway speeds, but on the side road's it has a nice sound. Quiet when idling and not too bad when accelerating. I want to get rid of that, hoping the mazdaspeed would still have a nice sound but not too loud. I do think that there is a different mazdaspeed exhaust for the p5 though. Hopefully I will be able to figure this out tomorrow when I call my dealer.
