my engine started to whisle

I drove my car a bit harder than usual (ie: 5500 rpm) and the engine started to whisle every time I would accelerate. It sounds super cool, but it worries me a bit....

Anyone else experienced this?

The car is a 5speed, Protege5, I got the RActive intake and running 94 gas, and I changed the oil at 4,000 Km and I'm aproaching 8,000 now.

are you sure that it's not just the intake sucking in air ???
it is somewhat of a whistling sound.......try reving the car while on neutral to see if the sound is coming from the filter....

the sound was there when in Neutral, but not as loud, yet still there. The funny thing is that it starts doing this after I drive it hard.

ye mine does this too

but i have a '99 LX Toruing Edition
1.8L engine

no mods at all...completely stock (FOR NOW!!! )

to me it sounds like a turbo is spooling up

it sounds really really cool... but mine happens more around 3000RPM...maybe it was 4000RPM....but down there is where it starts.....

yes, it starts around 3000rpm and gets crazzyer as you go higher...

anyway... have you had any problems? since when has it been doing that? how many km you got on your car now?

well from what i know
its been doing it for a little over half a year now...

I have 60,000+ KM on my car

but I haven't had any problems

wait wait

I had a blown gasket problem....which pulled a checked engine light...but this only happened about a month ago...and I got it fixed about a month after the CEL was shown.
hmmm...I need to see if my car makes that noise anymore....cuz i haven't noticed it much now....maybe i got too accustomed to it....that i don't notice it now.
but maybe it was something with the blown gasket.....when I drive it later on today, or tomorow...or whenever I'll ty to see if it makes a noise again...

otherwise it might be a problem with the gasket

MOre than likely it is just your intake and you just failed to notice it before. And what are you doing running 94 octane gas, you need to read your owners manual and run the recomended gas.

i have a 99 lx, and when it was completly stock it whistled everytime i drove it hard. at high rpm's, somebody told me, i cant remember who, thats its the dohc thats making it whistle. i dont know how true that is, but my car has 62,000 miles on it, and no problems at all. so i wouldent worry bout it. even with my intake and exhaust, i can still hear it whistle when i drive hard.

Same here. I have a 1.6L 2000 LX and it whistles often also.

Well, mine started doing it after I put my Inken CAI in. I listened and the sound was coming from the filter. No biggie. It usually happens when the throttle is about halfway open.

I have the same whistle, before and after the turbo.

You'll get used to it.

Yep... mine 'whistles' just over 3000rpm... it IS the air intake sucking it in.... sounds pretty cool...but would sound even cooler with the whistle of a T28 spooling up!
Mine is a stock SP20 (SP20 in Australia = Protege5 in US).

Also, the clear side indicators look fantastic on my black astina... top look.

Check out the site to my car, and also some great Astinas from Australia.

Cheers,
Bill

OK, the people that get the whisle, make sure you don't have too much oil in your car. I don't know for sure...but what if it's because of that (the oil beeing over max). The blown gasket from a reply above made me consider this. So next time you have your oil changed or maybe even know, make sure you don't have more than MAX oil in your car.
