HP Question.

I previously owned a 97' cavalier 2 dr coupe and i'm buying a 1999 Protege LX. I was wondering what was faster (i dont know much about cars)

And another question, What are some way of making it go faster? and i was looking around for a body kit w/ flare fenders, anyone know where i can find some?

Thanks for the help, if i get any.

Was it a Z24? If so, the pro will be slower.

Ways of making a protege go faster:

intake
exhaust
header
pistons
cams
headwork
engine management
reduce vehicle weight
lose unsprung weight
turbo
supercharger
N2O
strap it to a rocket
go down a steep hill

No it was just a regular coupe.

I knew someone would say something along those lines, althought i thought someone was going to say "press the right pedal down further"

I haven't driven that model of Cavy...but I would guess the power would be very close to the Pro, but the Pro would probably have a better suspension set up?

He forgot to mention stickers.
Lots of them.
And the e-bay chip. Very important piece there.
Just kidding.
Seriously, unless you plan on spending the money for FI of some kind, don't expect to get a LOT of straight-line power out of your 1.6L. The car handles well, but can be made even better with some money well-spent on suspension mods.

what engine is in your "new" LX?? 1.6 or 1.8?? The 2.2 Cavalier engine had 122 HP...the 1.8L Protege has 122 but will be faster than the cavalier...1.6L has 107hp but if the Cavalier is auto and you are 5 speed the 1.6L will still be faster

My better half had a 2000 Sunfire with the 2.2L "iron duke" pushrod inline four. If it's an automatic Cav, it's probably a dog (since you've got three speeds, slightly higher curb weight, and it is not as free revving as an overhead cam engine). That's just my guess. Put I would put money on the Protege being quicker through some turns, regardless of what engine you have in it. The Cav and Sunfire have creaky, ancient chassis dating back to the early 1980s. They are NOT sophisticated cars. And, they have these cheap-o rubbermaid interiors, vague feedback from steering and brakes, and somewhat heavy control feel. They aren't terrible cars, though. They are rugged, the engines were/ are bullet proof, and ones in good condition are cheap. I've also driven Z24 Cavaliers, and though it too is old school, they can be a lot of fun. Especially with a manual. But, I think you'll have more fun with your Protege. Take a look through our forum for info on all the power enhancements you can dream of. It's one of our favorite things to talk about here! Welcome.

buy a protege and sink some a little bit into it and be faster than almost every cavalier on the road.

p.s. plus it'll grow the protege community just that much more.

p.p.s. DONT buy the protege if you plan to rice it out. We'd like to screen all potential applicants if possible!
