High pitched tone from brakes

I recently changed the front brake pads on my 2000 Mazda Protege - using bendix pads. This was suppossed to be a simple replacement - and all went as it should.

However, the outside pad on each wheel appears to be wearing unevenly - more contact at the outer edge of the rotors than the center. There is also a high pitched tone from the left wheel when turning left. The same tone happens on the right when turning right. The inside of both rotors appear to be wearing evenly.

There is the slightest amount of play in the caliper - which was there before I replaced the pads.

Anyone have any bright ideas as to how to pinpoint why the outside pads don't seem to be seating properly????

Thanks to any and all that take the time to help out.
