Juan (owner of HiBoost) has a 1.6L turbo kit that made something ridiculous like 385whp on race gas and stock internals. It was even an automatic (but the tranny broke shortly after).

To put it into perspective...

2005 Evolution = 240whp (give or take a few)

1996 Protege 1.6L w/ HiBoost turbo kit = 385whp

Nothing like kicking the crap out of porsches, cobras, SS's, Evo's, STIs' in a beater protege.

www.protegegarage.com look in the protege section, then F.I., then 1.6L.

Welcome to the board! A lot of good info here - many people have been working with this car for years. A lot of questions have been asked before and debated.

Back to step one - develop a 'Plan for the Car'.

You already bought a drop-in filter and now want to get a CAI (which requires a different filter - you will now have a drop-in filter you can't use = wasted money already. s*l*o*w down just a bit, eh? And a turbo kit usually includes an intake as well. The header would have to come out and replaced with the turbo set up as well...

Is it worth boosting -or is it better to pay off the car and save for another/better car?

What is your goal? Go fast or look good? Handle well? Compete in SSCA or stop-light drag races? Stop watching Fast n' Furious - there were no Mazda Protges in the movie for a reason...

It is a great little car, reliable, good economy and with spirited handling. Most people opt for a balanced approach - intake/header/exhaust with maybe a underdrive pulley. Then wheels and lower springs. Next? Maybe a better stereo system.

Have a plan.

well i allready went ahead and did the stereo lol and yes ur right i want to have a plan i relized i wasted that money on the filter, its already paid for and i want to save of around 6 to 7k and do it all at once and get it done right! i want it too look good and go like hell, thats why i was thinkin of the 2L cuz i can do more with it and i dont mind the cost im gona keep it for a while if i can get over 225hp outa it! i love minis and i drove one the other day and its a dam nice car that goes like stink but its got basically the same engine so i say why not keep what i got and just keep chipin away at it rims shocks etc but ill do the engine stuff first and get it ALL done at once. any ideas on this plan???

Sounds like you have a reasonable approach now. Concensus [looking around] is that you turbo your existing motor. Start checking prices and you will have a goal to save toward.

Good luck!

alright i've been doing some research and found out that the 2L isn't a good idea, but i've also come across a mazda v6 engine that i think is in the mx6 or mx3 i cant remember but apparently it would fit nicely in a protege and it puts out almost 200 hp at stock. now i really don't know what to do, along with this if i keep the 1.6L do i turbo-charge it or supercharge it???? i've driven a supercharged car and i liked the instant power but i don't know what works better on a protege????

Not familiar with all the V6s but you can rule out the MX-3---it was a 1.9L V6, smallest V6 ever put into production and I know it didn't make 200 bhp. It was less than the 2.0L FS-DE iirc.
