This is the way I see it. So it would make all the cars you mentioned with 4 doors and a hatch, a wagon to me. I don't think there is anything wrong with a wagon, they just aren't for me. I don't see why it matters at all what anybody calls them. Unless you are too insecure to drive a car some people would call a wagon. And if thats the case, you have other things you should be worried about instead.

And just because insurance companies and KBB call them hatchbacks doesn't make it true. Some companies call the PT Cruiser a truck. To me thats insane, it doesn't have a bed.

for starters this is a debate that will NEVER end....as its only peoples opinions as to what it is....

this same discussion took place a while back.....personally....I call it a SPORT WAGON....its a combination of the two....

i did searchs into AUTOMOTIVE DICTIONARIES.....which defined the terms of Hatchback and Station Wagon......

there is nothing in any of these texts that says anthying about how many doors EITHER have....there is nothing that says that the wagon of a model has to be longer than the sedan model.....

but reading EVERY defination of BOTH.....our cars fit into BOTH catagories.....so call it what makes YOU fell better....as there is no way that ANYONE can prove you wrong.

As for the insurance companies and the way that they catagorize them? well if you will look into that...and I did....you will find out that the insurance rates are HIGHER for a COMPACT/HATCHBACK than they are for a STATIONWAGON.....so you tell me....just where do you think they are going to catagorize it? hmmmmm I think they are going to go for the MORE MONEY.....

many states base their annual licence plate fees on different things....but I think if you will check the actual registration on your car...you will also find the HB designation on it there too.....Where I live it makes no difference on the licence fees as its based on weight and engine displacement.....but none the less its on the registration...and thus that is how the insurance companies place it also.

I'm almost 30 and I drive a wagon. Okay, a really SPORTY wagon. It's my grown up, but still youthful vehicle.

I have to differentiate between my Focus and my Protege, so one's a hatch and the other is a wagon. I think the 'look' of the Protege5, as opposed to the Matrix or Vibe, is of a really condensed wagon. Maybe it is more hatch, but it definitely has some 'wagon' heritage built into it!

All my friends wanna ride in the *******' wagon banana-mobile!

 

Its whatever you want it to be really. Most people hate the word 'station wagon'. It reminds them too much of the Vista Crusier.
Saying something is a hatchback makes it sound more refined.
All the car companies want to sry to stay away from saying something is wagonish.
Just my 2 pennies.

I was just thinking... I usually associate a "wagon" with having a window (glass) behind the rear doors, on the sides.

And I associate "hatchback" with not having windows behind the doors... just the pillars.

At least that´s what I use to determine if I want to call it a hatchback or a wagon... so I call the P5 a wagon.

Given Mazda's marketing scheme of the P5, and it's popularity, it indeed is a Wagon.....
