Gear change and RPM
Hi all,
Glad to have found this great board.
SOld my MX-6 and bought a Silver P5 last September. It's a sweet ride - so far I've put 23600 km on it - drive on Hiway (401) about 110km (round trip) every day. Now the car is about ready for 24000 maintanace service.
It is an auto tranny. Now I notice that the car seems to change gears at higher RPMs or so I thought. I remember before I sold the MX-6 I had to get the clutch replaced cause it was burned and it did the same thing (The car was dragging even at higher RPM).
I'm especially concerned about gear change from 0 to 20Km/h.
Sometimes it seems that the rpm is to high before it changes to second gear.
Is there something wrong with my P5 transmission?
Here is a table of when and what situation the gears change.
Shift(KM) Shift(RPM)
1. On a flat road 20/40/60/80 2200/2500/2700/3000
(Normal start from full stop)
From 0 to 80 km/h without braking.
2. Flat road, AC on 20/40/60/80 2500/2700/3000/3000
(Normal start from full stop)
From 0 to 80 km/h without braking.
3. Start at traffic light
(a little late to work
) 20/40/60/80 3500/3200/3000
or sometimes higher. 4000/3200/3000/3000

The transmission will vary it's shift points depending on a variety of things such as throttle position, speed etc. It is trying to determine how fast you want to go, and provide the power or smoothness it feels you desire. With the AC I imagine the added drag causes you to need a little more gas pedal, and thus the higher shift point. Same thing when leaving a light (a little late for work)...more gas pedal equals a higher shift point for more power. Sounds like it's working fine to me.

Appreciate your reply Nramsey.
It's just that I think.. that now the transmission changes gears not as smooth as it used to be (when it was brand new..
). I can now feel more significant pause between gear change from first to second. I'd been driving standard for along while before.... guess I should 've gotten standard instead so that I can control when to change gears....
