How can you check the O2 sensors and how and where are they located? Mines a 01 protege. I am getting bad mileage, but its really cold and those Bosch plat4 really suck and foul easy. Or so I have read on other sites.

i just went on a road trip thinking that the gas mileage i would get would be higher than normal because it'd be almost all highway miles. sad to say i was wrong. i drove a total of about 450 miles, was going witht he flow of traffic at about 70-75mph. gas mileage was only 25mpg. what's with that?! the best i ever got was about 27.5mpg. i was thinking i was gonna hit that upper gas mileage range closer to the 30mpg that's posted on the sticker. i can only guess that you have to keep the car under 3k rpm to get that high gas mileage. this car may be fun to drive but it's definitely not a typical japanese efficiency car. i can only guess that the best speed to drive the car for gas mileage is around 65 mph....maybe even a little less.

btw, i have a 03 p5 with 15500 miles. had the oil changed about 2 weeks ago, checked the tire pressure and everything.

Topher,

what do you suggest? i'm not trying to make it go faster, just better gas mileage...at least for right now.

oh yeah....no a/c at all. just heat vent, and not the one that's straight to the floor, the ones that don't require the a/c.

I've analyzed this mileage thing to death... I have Protege LX 2002 and here are my findings... any driving over 3000rpms, especially highway, will suck more gas considerably. Thats it!
This model was made to rev high for driving enthusiasm and there is no way we're going to get the same results as, say a Honda.

One thing I did do recently is change gas station/company and believe it or not got 50 more miles out of my tank, same driving.

The floor/dash compressor things sounds interesting though...

87 octane Amoco is the best I've used. And you're right, 3K or under on the highway is the only way I can get 30mpg (without compressor).
You'd be surprised how much drag open windows cause too. That's just a fact, I'm really not that **** about mpg.

All I can say is P5 Auto sucks

All I can say is P5 Auto sucks

I had my P5 auto since May 2001

I tried :

Different gas grades
Different gas stations
Different driving styles
Many different spark plugs
With and without Intake resonator
All seasons

All I can say is our engines run extremely rich

Chuck,

You have a lot of variation in your mileage. Do you let the car idle a lot in the winter? I'm in Calgary (complete with the long stretches of -35 weather this winter), and my mileage probably never dropped once below 10.5 or 11 l/100km. Mind you I have a standard so I would expect slightly better mileage under most conditions. The best I have gotten is about 8.5 or 9 l/100km, which is well below the best mileage some others have been able to squeeze out of these cars.

Maybe the mileage variations we see are the way the oil companies set their pumps /end conspiracy theory/

Dale.

QUOTE:Mind you I have a standard so I would expect slightly better mileage under most conditions.

That is the reason why you never drop that low.

The variations are mostly driving style.

All my tracking has been done at the same station and the same pump.

damn i cant believe you lot complain about your miles per gallon. when it costs you next to nothing for fuel!!!!!

you should try living here in the uk we have the nearly the most expensive prices for fuel in the WHOLE WORLD. I spend 30 pounds a week on average filling up my car, and I gun my car about everywhere. thats like 70-80 dollers to you isnt it???

in regards to the original post by the guy whos having trouble. you really should get your car looked at, i think you might need a service.. and arnt you supposed to put 95 RON fuel in your car?? we call it super unleaded in the UK. My mazda still runs ok on the cheaper 90 RON fuel but try using Optimax it runs much better and i think its more MPG on optimax.

in addition try getting your injectors cleaned/checked over, that might be the reason as the nozzles maybe retricted by debris??

Pisses me off, you ought to be able to turn the damn compressor off if you don't want it. I have to leave the heater vent on "floor/dash" all the time. That's my biggest peeve with my P5.
Is that a "feature" on US models? Up here in Canada the A/C only comes on 'automatically' when you switch to the windshield (defrost) vents. (or is it a "feature" on the 2001+ models?

I've got a 2000 1.8L

Remember i'm doing CANADIAN winter driving with -30c-50c weather in 2-3 inches of snow and idling it for 5-10mins in the morning.

Im driving an Auto '03 ES-GT got it in the fall so I don't know how it will run in the summer.
Up here we measure the mileage as litres per hundred kilometers.
My 2000 1.8L averages 8-10L/100k with a mix of highway and city driving. (works out to 450-550 km per tank.
