This is what i'm doing, in about 40L fill up I get lets say 275km (From full to 1/4mark) That is 275/40 = 6.9km a Litre. How much is my MPG?

I calculated that and this is what I got 16.23 MPG...

According to the stats of the car I should be getting 20MPG in the city...how do you get it up there?

Jaf... I'm getting about 20mpg here in the Peg spending most time in rush hour traffic. Not doing anything special except running with 40psi & AEM intake. As you can appreciate my driving style in the winter is pretty mild on our streets which always helps.

Jaf,

I would think that your idling is the biggest culprit. I typically get about 390-450km per fillup (around 40-45L). My mileage is definitely better than yours, but i don't normally idle more than a couple minutes at startup. I get much better mileage in the summer (even taking into account the A/C compressor).

Yeah see I can't really compare it now because we just had very below seasonal weather all of January. I got my car in the fall so I don't know how it will run during summer...until then I can get mroe accurate readings.

What are you driving? Manual ES? Auto ES?

So what's the trick with the A/C compressor?

I have a manual P5. The a/c compressor runs in all settings except for dash vents only, and dash/floor vents, unfortunately, so you're pretty much stuck in the winter with the a/c compressor running. There have been some threads on altering the switches for the heating system so that the a/c doesn't run in the floor only position. Look here. I haven't had any desire to give this one a shot.

If you think the mileage is too low, you could get the dealer to look into it, since you are under warranty. If there is a problem with any of the emissions equipment, this could result in unusually low mileage. Given what you said, though, I don't know that you have any issues.

So if I just leave it on the front vents and the floor vents it won't be running?

Yes. Dash and floor, or dash only. Defrost, Defrost and floor, and floor only all run the compressor.

Wow that's pretty crappy engineering...are Toyota's or Honda's like this?

I'm also gonna boost up my car to 40psi just like Lerxst did.

Well, just got the word from the dealer service shop, fouled plugs! They are installing new ones tonight, and I will be able to see if this was the true culprit. Makes sense, there is 25,000miles on the car, getting close to the 30,000miles schedualed maintenance service. I will let you all know what happens.

Thanks for the input.

Is your O/D on or off? It should be on to let the A/T shift into 4th gear. In 4th gear you should be running about 3000 RPM at 70 MPH.

This has been an enlightening thread...
I thought I was the only one getting what I thought was pretty low mpg. This winter in Pittsburgh, which has pretty much sucked, I have been getting only about 26 mpg. I drive @ 40 mi each way to work, all highway, some rush hour traffic. I had NO IDEA about the a/c compressor. Guess I shoulda read the manual all the way thru...

So I ran the vent/floor last night & this morning. I could feel the difference immediately--at idle, when I shifted. I'm sure my mpg will be better, too.
I'm such a dumbass, can't believe I didn't notice the a/c compressor was running all this time!!!

Youve probably found the prob but check your O2's as well

new O2 sensor will bring back your MPG straight away

do you know if your car is running rich at all any black soot around your exhaust ??
